About the Author
Edred Thorsson (pen name of Stephen E. Flowers) founded the Rune-Gild in 1980. It is the only traditional initiatory organization that employs the Runic key to personal and cultural development. Edred received his Ph.D. in 1984 with a dissertation entitled Runes and Magic. He has subsequently authored over forty books on topics of runology, Germanic myth and tradition, and Indo-European religion and culture.

An amazing book.

An amazing book...so much info about the Goths I may never have known otherwise. He wrote this book, I felt, with great inner knowing which enhanced his scholarly knowledge of these mysterious & amazing people. He seemed to convey a sense that their ties to history are etched, into the present, like some sort of invisible ink. From Gotland they came, with a force & influence, that surely left it's mark in much of Europe.

Reading this memoir was an experience in itself!!

Amazing Book!

Felt so great reading this.

Reading biography of great people is my hobby to learn from them. But reading this memoir was an experience in itself!!

This book takes its readers into the life journey of Om Swami in a special way, where you can't stop but keep visualizing each and every scene in front of the eyes, and you feel like you are witnessing every moment of Om Swami's life in search of truth.

I don't find proper word in English to describe how amazing this book is! It gives you some divine pleasure while reading, I simply but strongly just recommend to buy this book and experience yourself to see how it feels!

If Truth Be Told – A Monk’s Memoir.
It is not just a book, but the journey of the author. While you embark on this journey with him, you are sure to find your own path or if you have found it already, it will surely guide you through it. In the challenging times of today, when it is hard to believe or pick from the pool of information available to us, just one read of this book would leave you with no choice. Truth has a magnetic pull to it and the one who is really seeking it, would recognize it in no time.
I cried, laughed and got lost, I felt as though I was witnessing every moment. At some point in time each of us wish to lead a life of truthfulness, of principles that we want to stand by, but we tend to be weak (I do). But the author, brings forth to life, the ocean of myriad possibilities – which we were either told to bury, as a child, or learnt to do so .This is not just an inspirational book, this is much much more if you would trust me.
While yes, it guides us on the spiritual path but there is more to it. I would say it makes us gather all the strength we have in our own selves and helps us walk on our path. It is not only a narration of incidents, but at the same time it also shakes our conditioned souls to remove the veils that we have been living with.
I have been reading the author’s blog – omswami.com for some time now, and can tell you that I could never have imagined that behind the simplicity and humbleness which is evident from the blog posts lies a being who rose beyond all the barriers and painstakingly pursued his dream – To Meet God. He left behind everything, family, friends, unimaginable wealth and even refused to provide basic comfort to his own body.
We all have our own inferences, and it offers one to everyone. You will be astonished to what you are holding in your hands and then at yourself. I have read the book twice now and about to finish the third read. I am amazed whenever I read it , it just answers the questions within yet so subtly.
A must read for everyone. No matter who you are, which culture or tradition you belong to, what question you have. You may be on a spiritual journey or may not be .. but you have to read it once in your life. This book has a lot to offer. If you haven’t read it you are missing on something in life.

Love Conquers All... Surrender to it.. E. FROMM

"Love," says Fromm, "is the only satisfactory answer to the problem of human existence." Poets have written that, "Love conquers all," and to "surrender to it." Urging one to surrender implies resistence to Love, but why?
Fromm asks, is Love an art, or is Love a pleasant sensation or feeling which to experience is a metter of chance, i.e. something one, "falls into," if one is lucky. Fromm asserts that Love is an art, and says that to truly Love, in all its forms, one must possess: Maturity; Self-Knowledge; and Courage.
"Object," or "faculty,": Many people pursue objects or affection, or objects to love, and correspondingly treat them as possessions. Fromm asserts that Love is the faculty or ability to Love in its different forms: brotherly love; romantic love, etc. Since Love is an art to be practiced, Fromm asserts that it can only be practiced in freedom with one another. In other words, people cannot treat others as objects or possessions to be controlled for ones own egotistical or selfish purposes. Such behavior to result in certain destruction and never to attain true Love.
"Love," vs. "falling in Love/Infatuation,": People speak of falling in Love, with new people they meet. Falling in Love is not necessarly Love, but infatuation, e.g., strangers meet, they break down social walls between one another, they feel close/as one. This new experience, infatuation, Fromm describes as "one of the most exhilarating and most exciting experiences in life. However, Fromm argues astutely, that this initial infatuation feeling slowly and naturally loses its miraculous character more and more with time, as the two people get more acquainted and learn more and more about eachother - flaws, character defects, etc. Fromm says the problem all-to-often arises when people confuse infatuation feelings (exhilaration/excitement) for proof of the intensity of their Love. As the infatuation feelings naturally subside, it results in the wish for a new conquest, a new "Love," with a new stranger. Again the stranger is transformed into an "intimate" person, again the experience of falling in love is exhilarating and intense, and again it slowly becomes less and less, and ends in another wish for a new conquest - a new "Love," always with the illusion that the new "Love," will be different from the earlier ones. Fromm says this is not Love. These illusions are greatly helped by the deceptive character of sexual desires. Sexual desire aims at fusion, says Fromm. It can be stimulated by the anxiety of aloneness, by the wish to conquer, by vanity, by the wish to hurt or even to destroy, as much as it can be stimulated by Love. Because most people associate sexual desire with the idea of Love, says Fromm, they are easily misled to conclude that they Love each other only when they want each other physically. Fromm asserts this is not unlike a drug addiction, when people constantly seek out the exhilaration/excitement of infatuation. Fromm cautions that if the desire for physical union is not stimulated by Love, if romantic/erotic Love is not also coupled with other forms of Love, that it will never lead to union in more than an orgiastic, transitory sense.
An implication of this that when this happens, i.e., when one finds new infatuation, the other one on the losing end gets scarredm then after a few times of getting burnt will begin to actively destroy or sabotage Love in the nascent stage when it occurs in the future, in an effort to avoid the past painful feelings associated with Love gone wrong or to avoid feelings of vulnerability and/or to maintain control -- in essence to not surrender to Love.
Fromm describes what he calls the essential components that need to be mastered, for all forms of Love: Care (the active concern for the life and the growth of that which we love); Responsibility (to be able, willing and ready to respond to the psychic nneds of the other); Respect (concern that the other person should grow and unfold as he/she is on their own, to be aware of her unique individuality - freedom); and Knowledge(a desire to discover what makes the other "tick," an active penetration of the other person).
Fromm concludes that Love is not just a feeling, it is a decision, it is a judgment, it is a promise. To love means to surrender and commit without guarantees. Love is an act of utter faith says Fromm.

Read it, then give a copy to the people you care about

I have reread this book more than any other that I own, partly because it's short, but mostly because Fromm is such a lucid and perceptive writer. I simply cannot recommend this book highly enough. I don't agree with all of it -- his take on homosexuality, for instance, which may or may not be attributable to the day in which it was written -- and many readers may not care for the way he frames behavioral patterns in psychoanalytic terms. That said, you can read right past those stylistic elements, because his prose is positively oozing with compassion. I don't think it's overly dramatic to say that it would take me longer to convey how excellent this little book is than it would take you to read it.

Essential Reading

Fromm does a great job of reviewing the various "types" of Love and providing the characteristics of each. His review clarifies what purpose each kind of love serves in our lives.

The book is an exceptional treatise on this most elusive topic. It's a very rational breakdown of what it is to love, what it means to each of us to love, and how it serves us (and the world) to love.

This isn't a Leo Buscalia book, but rather a very good compliment to one. This book is more an analysis of fundamental principles involved in love and loving. It's an in depth discussion, not a collection of stories. But it is very unique in a field of less thought provoking (but good feelings) books.

If you are a thinker, and still want to be a feeling person, the book can help you. For the mind, this is clarity. The book will help you get your mind out of the way so you can begin feeling - because it will teach your mind what your heart is trying to say.

Very readable and enjoyable... Hope hospitals "get it" before I need one as a patient!

I "read" the audio version... very well done. Well written, just the right mix of theory and stories, and for the audio version, the reader was excellent.

And I find this book hopeful... as a physician with 30+ years in medicine, I have a grave fear of the time when I become a ward of the medical-industrial complex. In general, it is not patient-centric, nor in some cases, imbued with much common sense. This is a sad reality. This book won't fix all that ails us, but the ideas presented, and the spirit contained therein, are a great start.

A decent reading of an important book (for Hospital Executives)

This book is getting a little long in the tooth now...but if you're a hospital exec looking to get a better handle on your customer satisfaction / net promotor scores, it is essential in my opinion. It's a great reminder of the "early days" of customer sat in healthcare, and really sets the groundwork for things like Value Based Purchasing.

The book is a good read, easy and fast. It is written in a conversational tone and gives great, specific examples. It can be ACTED UPON quickly. I enjoy reading it.

However, I'm now finding that it's easier for me to "read" business books via audiobook. Great way to spend my time in the car. The conversational tone of this book really lends itself to the audio format. The narrator is the author, Fred Lee. He's good at conveying the meaning of his book and overall is good. Occasionally, he trips over words and his voice is not exactly "radio star" quality. And the music that leads in and out of each chapter is AWFUL. But these are minor complaints compared to the value I get from having these discs.

The audience for this product is tiny...but if you're in that audience, you NEED this (either CDs, book or both). It's time well-spent helping to refocus on what TRULY makes your customers (patients) loyal and satisfied.

Being in the medical career, I am always on the lookout for good ideas dealing with customer service. I didn't know what to expect with this book. The author presents some good material. I was just thinking it might be a bit more entertaining, but it still presents some great information that anyone can learn from

Robert Moran, Ph.D., is a Professor of Global Management, Emeritus at Thunderbird School of Global Management in Arizona, USA.

Dr. Philip R. Harris is President of Harris International, Ltd. in LaJolla, California. He is Series Editor of the Managing Cultural Differences Series and co-author of B-H books Managing Cultural Differences, Multicultural Management 2000, and Transcultural Leadership. He is on the advisory board of the European Business Review.

Sarah Moran has worked extensively in the areas of organizational and cross-cultural relations. She co-facilitated employee relations workshops with internal teams for Motorola and Intel employees to use cross-cultural management strategies to better manage global responsibilities. She has also worked with high level military nurses serving the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force regarding fiscal priorities regarding health care concerns. As a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Council with The Hartford Company she worked implementing diversity awareness strategies to improve employee productivity. As a corporate examiner with Arizona Quality Alliance, she formulated an onsite examination strategy which included an analysis of organizational performance, development and leadership. Sarah earned her Masters in Organizational and Intercultural Communications from Arizona State University. I am a nurse that was required to take this class as part of my advanced studies. Although the book is buisiness focued, it proved to be a good resource. The material is broken down into easy to understand and read sections.

Terrible Condition

This used book arrived and when I opened it I was appalled. It looked like it had been wet, eaten on, it was dogeared , marked up, and was in generally horrible condition. I have looked at the guidelines for selling used books to Amazon, and they want them to be in good condition, so this was a shock. I did NOT get my money's worth, and I know they paid the student a pittance for his/her book. In this case, I can see why. It wasn't worth a penny. I paid way too much for this piece of crap. I will never order a used book again from this service, since it is clear that I cannot trust the service to deliver a used book in decent condition. What a huge waste of time and money.

Managing Cultural Differences provides great depth of insight on a broad range of issues related to the impact of culture on global management. In addition, the authors drill down on regional cultural specifics to look at the behaviors behind cultural tendencies within the context of history, politics, economics, law, society, environmental factors, etc. It's an exceptionally well-sourced publication covering the tried and true academic/management resources as well as contemporary cultural anthropologists working on cross-cultural effectiveness. However, I found the personal experiences of Dr. Moran to be most valuable and entertaining. With over 65 nationalities in our organization, I've turned to MCD countless times to help support increased collaboration with the challenges we face. It's the one book I turn to again and again as I work to improve and leverage my own personal level of intercultural effectiveness. Highly recommended.
