Hilarious and witty, must read

I loved this graphic novel, the writing is clever, the character interactions are hilarious, and the art work is stunning. Eurico, a pizza delivery boy in Lisbon, Portugal is kind of a nerd. He is picked on by a bully at work and pines secretly for the girl who takes the pizza orders. That all changes when his scooter is stolen by gargoyles and he enlists the help of Occult Detectives Dog Mendonça and his partner, Pazuul. Pazuul looks like a little girl, but is actually a 6000 year old male demon and while he never speaks, his body language tells you all you need to know. Dog's job is to keep humans safe from the monsters in the world while also protecting the more benign supernatural creatures from violent humans. Dog, Pazuul and Eurico team up with a gargoyle head (Dog kind of ripped it off the body) when they discover a far more sinister plot: someone is kidnapping the children of Lisbon. Along the way we meet Vlad, King of vampires and nightclub owner, a cross-dressing oracle, and an army of zombie Nazis. This is an action-packed snark fest of a read.

The art work is fabulous, especially the backgrounds, which are vividly colored and detailed. There are many panels without dialogue but the action and facial expressions speak volumes. Not only was the dialogue funny, but the text was laid out in a way that enhanced the humorous tone of the story. For example, there is a four page scene where Dog and Eurico are hanging upside down and the text in their dialogue bubbles is upside down too.

At the end of the book there are eleven pages dedicated to how Filipe Melo took his idea from concept to graphic novel including lots of original artwork sketches. The story started out as a screen play, but Portugal doesn't really have a movie industry so the idea for turning it into a graphic novel was the next best thing. Filipe wanted to pay tribute to all the movies he loved growing up like Big Trouble in Little China, Gremlins, Back to the Future, and John Landis's An American Werewolf in London. The comic book Dylan Dog also influenced him. John Landis was so impressed with this Portuguese comic that he wrote the forward for it and took it to Dark Horse to see if they would make an American version.

To lift and carry a 500lb rock and then do hundreds of reps of kettlebell swinging, Indian club swinging, sledgehammer swinging and heavy bag punching, etc. I have been a state, regional, national, and world record holder and champion in drug free, raw powerlifting. As well as a strongman competitor, Highland Games competitor, Girevoy sport competitor, martial artist, college football player, and full contact fighter. All these experiences have shaped my thoughts on training and being able to have all the attributes necessary for all these different activities at the same time. Very few people have been blessed enough to gain the knowledge and background of the different training regimens and routines to be able to put things together in a way you can really apply to your training. To get the best out of your work. To be what you want to be. Because I’ve been in the trenches and trained this way and done most of everything anybody wants to do, then maybe I can help you achieve the goals you want. Fond Memories

I remember buying this as an e-book many years ago from Bud Jeffries' old site. After buying it, I also remember trying to collect all the printer paper in the house so I could print this out. Quick note: this was years before I had a laptop or iPod for that matter. I didn't want to sit at a desk for a prolonged period of time to try to read a book. Back to the review.

SHORT REVIEW: I like this book. I think it should be in everybody's strength/ fitness library, if you have one.

Now for the LONGER REVIEW for those who are interested:

This book is a little difficult for me to review. I would have to almost write two separate reviews. One for when I originally read it, and one for what I think about it now. I'll try my best to combine those two viewpoints into one logical review.

When I first read this book, it changed the way I looked at training/ working out. Prior to this book, I did mostly body weight & practicing martial arts. This book introduced me to concepts and training ideas I hadn't heard of before. I was in awe.

Fast forward some years, I still think highly of this book. I like Bud's conversational tone. He takes the time to explain things in ways that most people will understand. I have a few of his DVDs and this is really how he talks. I don't like the more "scientific" books on fitness. They tend to be too technical and full of terms that the average person isn't going to understand unless they were deeper into the fitness field. Bud's products aren't like that. It isn't that he talks to you like you're stupid. It isn't that he's not that bright himself. On the contrary, everything that I've seen proves otherwise. He just doesn't waste time making things more complicated than necessary.

As for the content of the book, I think it has stood the test of time. It talks about some of Bud's earliest ideas about how to build incredible strength and endurance. It was one of the first modern books to actually talk about strongman training that I know of. Again, it is a recommended read.

Now for the negatives, or the less positive points. I have read and experimented with a LOT of things when it comes to physical training. I still implement some ideas from this book, but not all. My endurance work now includes more traditional cardio work. Bud's ideas (in this very early book at least) will give you good strength, but his endurance part is more muscle/ strength endurance than pure top level cardio endurance. I think both are important for general fitness. I believe Bud does too, but his ideas back then differ from mine currently about how to obtain it best. Also, this book is a bit expensive. I still recommend it, but $35 seems slightly overpriced. Unfortunately, this book is still in a bit of a niche market and probably not mass produced. I'm not an expert on these things, but that most likely means that it costs them more to produce it. People still have to feed their family. It may not be the most reasonable (by my frugal standards anyway), but it isn't outrageously priced either.

Man, this review is getting long. Sorry about that. I just felt like I had to make up for the lack of reviews about this book. It deserve at least one person's opinion. Pick up this book if you're interested. If nothing else, I think it's a very interesting read.

Fantastic!!!

I have tried at least three or four different vocal books, imported the CD into my iTunes, use them for a few days and become bored, EASILY! With "Your Singing Voice" I've been using it non stop for months now. Jeannie explains everything so clearly explained and well written, and there is so many different exercises, you can't really get bored. This book really is a MUST for anyone interested in singing, both professionally and for fun!

This book is really a must-read for anyone interested in singing. Jeanie's writing style is interesting AND extremely informative. I have been studying vocal technique for quite a while now, and I have already learned so much from reading this book. From vocal exercises to the simplest of tips that make a HUGE difference, "Your Singing Voice" is definitely a guide to healthy, fantastic singing and vocal wellness which I highly recommend!

About the Author

Ananjan Basu completed his BTech in Electrical engineering and MTech in Communication and Radar Engineering from IIT Delhi in 1991 and 1993, respectively, and his PhD in electrical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1998. He has been employed at the Centre for Applied Research in Electronics, IIT Delhi as visiting faculty from 1999 to 2000, as assistant professor from 2000 to 2005, as associate professor from 2005 to 2012, and as professor from 2013. His specialization is in microwave and millimeter-wave component design and characterization. He has published more than 80 papers in journals and conferences.

One of the most important works in practical theology

Andrew Root doesn't just offer a new way forward for practical theology, he offers it as a distinct way of thinking theologically, full stop. Attending to the concrete and lived experience of divine and human encounter--in the face of the impossibility which surrounds human action--Root exegetes the text of human experience through the lens of God's being as becoming, through the lens of ministry itself. As such, Root gives us a theological method (indeed a theology of the cross) that is practical, interdisciplinary, but utterly and fundamentally theological--grounded in normativity. Through the (perhaps counterintuitive) lens of justification, Root shifts the ground on which practical theology stands, orienting human action toward reception of the ministering presence of the living Jesus within the impossibility and death of the human condition. Root puts the 'theology' back in practical theology and turns 'practice' back toward participation in the person of God through the ministry of God.

This may be the most important work in the field of practical theology in the last decade. It is no doubt the most important theological contribution from Andrew Root so far.

Phenomenally breathtaking, Root's offering here may redefine the discipline. His argument is elaborate, clear, easy to follow and well worth the effort. Belongs on every shelf. Equal to or better than Don Browning's and Ray Anderson's opus which both have set milestone's in the discipline of Practical Theology.
