The Growth Strategies of Hotel Chains: Best Business Practices

How did Accor, Cendant, Choice Hotels International, Marriott, and Hilton become the largest hotel chains in the world—and what strategies will they use to continue their growth?

This first-of-its-kind textbook presents a balanced overview of the theory and practice of hotel chains’ growth strategies. It explains in-depth how and why the largest worldwide hotel chains achieved dominant international status and shows how to forecast future developments. Authentic international examples in every chapter bring theoretical concepts into sharp focus.

The Growth Strategies of Hotel Chains: Best Practices by Leading Companies is comprised of thirteen chapters, each divided into two parts. The first part sets forth the theory behind an important aspect of growth strategy. The second part of each chapter brings these theoretical arguments to life with specific case examples. For example, in the chapter on franchising, the ten largest hotel franchise businesses in the world are discussed in detail—including their actual fees and how they function, with helpful commentary on each. This format, designed with educators’ needs in mind, is consistent throughout the text. Charts, tables, and figures make complex information easy to access and understand.

The Growth Strategies of Hotel Chains: Best Practices by Leading Companies examines:

  • the question of diversification vs. specialization
  • vertical, horizontal, and diagonal integration
  • acquisitions, mergers, and strategic alliances
  • franchise contracts, management contracts, leaseholds, and ownership
  • branding and globalization
  • why European chains usually expand via property acquisitions and rentals while most American chains prefer management contracts and franchising
Packed with information yet written in language that students and hospitality executives can understand, this unique, comprehensive textbook deserves a place in every teaching/training/professional library.

Absolute joke
By Miquel B
First of all, how it can cost 175$?

This book is an absolute joke, full of facts that can be easily found in any internet search engine, his point of view is representative of the extremely low quality of education given by the Balearic Islands University, the MBA program, which he is a director, has in their website as "student experiences" a girl that after studying the MBA is a f...ing saleswoman in Leroy Merlin (spanish Home Depot).

He has no connections with any big hotel chains manager and he has never done any consultory work for them.

In his classes is famous by quotes as "Mathematics aren't important at all, knowing adding and substraction is more than enough", "I had lunch with Florentino Pérez (CEO of one of the largest spanish land developers and construction companies) in his yacht" and his more famous quote, ussually given 5 times per semester "the best place to do business is the bar at luch time, but be careful with the drinking"

The second editorial review is given by his mentor, that he is also a codirector in the MBA program and is also very representative of the poor quality of the education in Mallorca, everytime a student asks a question that he doesn't understand (and there are plenty) he gives his infamous answer "this is a question, that all the great economists in the world are trying to solve", is really shocking when you ask other professors and can give you proper answers and recomend you books and papers about that issue.

As the 1938 hurricane approaches Rhode Island, another storm brews in this novel from the author of The Secret Life of Violet Grant.
“Blends history, romance, and social commentary into...much more than a summer guilty pleasure” (Connecticut Post)

Memorial Day, 1938

Lily Dane has returned to Seaview, Rhode Island, where her family has summered for generations. It’s an escape not only from New York’s social scene but from a heartbreak that still haunts her. Here, among the seaside community that has embraced her since childhood, she finds comfort in the familiar rituals of summer.

But this summer is different. Budgie and Nick Greenwald—Lily’s former best friend and former fiancé—have arrived, too, and Seaview’s elite are abuzz. Under Budgie’s glamorous influence, Lily is seduced into a complicated web of renewed friendship and dangerous longing.

As a cataclysmic hurricane churns north through the Atlantic, and uneasy secrets slowly reveal themselves, Lily and Nick must confront an emotional storm that will change their worlds forever…

From Booklist
Dashing football hero Nick Greenwald is catapulted into the rarified milieu of Park Avenue penthouses and Ivy League campuses in the uncertain days of the Great Depression when he falls in love with Lily Dane. The meeker (though more polished), moral, and beautiful best friend of Zeldaesque flapper Budgie Byrne, Lily is immediately smitten with Nick’s determination and strength, an attraction the manipulative Budgie doesn’t encourage, though she doesn’t necessarily discourage it, either. After all, Nick is Jewish, and Budgie is confident that Lily’s socially conservative family will never condone the match. They don’t, and Budgie profits from the rift, marrying Nick on the rebound, while Lily nurses her broken heart. Seven years later, the Greenwalds turn up at Seaview, Rhode Island, the perennial summer enclave for the Danes, Byrnes, and other WASP stalwarts, and their renewed presence in Lily’s life unleashes a storm of unexpected consequences. Williams’ sweeping saga of betrayal, sacrifice, and redemption trenchantly examines the often duplicitous nature of female friendships and family expectations. --Carol Haggas

A Hundred Summers: A Perfect Beach Read
By Tina Says
In 1931 two socialite college girls, Lily Dane and Budgie Byrne, attend college football games to watch Budgie's boyfriend play. Lily meets Nicholsen Greenwald at a game, and the two are instantly struck by each other. Their courtship is marred by the fact that Nick is Jewish, and when Lily attempts to introduce him to her parents they are adamant that Lily end the relationship.

Things have always seemed a bit easier for Budgie whose boyfriend, Harrison, is eventually cast aside for a different boyfriend, a pattern that repeats itself often in Budgie's life.

Now 1938, Lily is summering at Seaview, the beach house her family has vacationed at for generations. Budgie will be arriving shortly at her family's beach house, and Lily is nervous for her arrival since the two haven't spoken in years. In addition, Budgie is now Budgie Greenwald, having married Nick, who had once been the love of Lily's life.

The chapters alternate setting between 1931 and 1938 and I raced through each chapter in order to discover what occurred between Lily and Nick that ended what appeared to be a perfect love affair. As I read secrets were revealed - enjoyable especially since I didn't foresee any of them in advance. I fell in love with Nick, a gentleman from the book's beginning and wanted both he and Lily to find happiness.

The cover of this book perfectly captures this time period, which in addition to the 1930s setting, also is marked by the Hurricane of 1938 that swept away entire beach communities like Seaview where Lily and Budgie had summer homes.

A Hundred Summers left me with a book hangover; every title I have picked up since hasn't held much appeal.

Beach Read with a Hurricane Warning
By Ms Winston
Ever since I heard about the New England hurricane of 1938 I have been fascinated by it -- those of us who live along the East Coast today are thankful that the National Weather Service, the Hurricane Center, and the Weather Channel can keep us updated almost to the minute as to when a hurricane will strike. In 1938, folks were not so lucky. And into the literal hurricane comes Hurricane Budgie back into the life of our heroine Lily Dane, bringing with her Lily's former love, Nick Greenwald, now Budgie's husband.

The book alternates between 1931/2, when Budgie and Lily are great college friends, and Lily is in love with Nick, and 1938, when the September hurricane resolves many issues. There are secrets to be solved, and one of the biggest is why Nick left Lily, and how he ended up married to Budgie years later. We also need to resolve the issue of who is the mother of Kiki, five years old in May of 1938 -- is she Lily's sister or her daughter? Kiki is actually one of the weakest parts of this novel, as proof that the author, Beatriz Williams, cannot write realistic dialog for children. If you were not told that Kiki is not quite six years old in 1938, you would probably think she was an older teenager. At one point, Kiki says, speaking of herself: "Let the child have her fun," which is rather improbable dialog for a child not even in 1st grade. And it only gets worse later in the same chapter, when Kiki sees a man who is a stranger to her: "Well, hello. I haven't seen you around before." Anyone who is a parent or grandparent can recognize that most five year old children do not talk this way. And there is not really much to my mind that is terribly remarkable about Kiki that would make her sound that mature. To be fair, many writers cannot deliver realistic dialog for children, and tend to want to make them sound much older than their years.

Some readers were surprised that there was so much anti-Jewish sentiment in the United States in the time period that the novel is set, but those who know their political and social history are aware that it was an issue. Nick Greenwald has had to deal with this most of his life and that is why it is somewhat improbable that he got mixed up with Budgie. Now we would call Lily and Budgie "friendamies," that catch-all term to describe someone who is on the surface your friend, but, you discover, sometimes too late, that the person doesn't have your best interests at heart. Lily also has another "friendamie" that she is going to marry -- Yankee's pitcher Graham Pendleton, whom she also knew in college. Lily's Aunt Julie is a droll, if rather cliche, character of the crusty old aunt or grandmother or neighbor type who drinks a little too much but has the great big heart of gold. The climax of the novel is the hurricane, which is told in realistic and breathless terms. My overall feeling about this book is that it deals with vital issues of prejudice and betrayal, of fake vs real friends, of secrets that wound for years before they are finally resolved. For the most part, with the exception of the odd Kiki dialog, it is well-written and holds the interest of the reader.

Jerry Springer For The Elite (Contains Spoilers)
By Quirky Girl
Even if you add in "historic" events, a well-to-do family, racism, - this story, if told today, is nothing more than a Jerry Springer show.
Budgie is the well to do girl, who guys adore, who seems to have it all, including the man her best friend (Lily) loves. There is a switching of partners. And Budgie ends up with Lily's "one true love" and Lily becomes engaged to Budgie's old flame.
There is nothing about Budgie in the whole (almost 400 pages)to make the reader her like her one bit. And then, suddenly (SPOILER) - we learn in the last few pages, in a few sentences, that Budgie was molested by her father. It's just kind of thrown in there. Oh, by the way, here's why I've been a mean girl all my life. Then she gets swept away a hurricane. Wow, how convenient. Now Lily can finally marry the man of her dreams! And, even though Nick was married to Budgie - (SPOILER)he only had sex ONCE with her and that was prior to their marriage. Uh huh. Ok.
I read this book by the pool, and more than once someone asked me what was wrong because I had a scowl on my face. "This book is so freaking ridiculous!" Was always my answer. As least I got a good tan.
This book is NOTHING like Gossip Girl. At least with GG, the "mean" characters were somewhat empathetic. The only character that came close to being likeable was Nick - but that's not to say I ever came to like him.
Flat. Dull. And explanations thrown in at the very end like someone suddenly remembering to add salt to a stew - and by then, it's far too late.
Hated This.

From Publishers Weekly
As a military intelligence officer in World War II, Rockefeller learned his effectiveness depended on his "ability to develop a network of people with reliable information and influence." During his long life-he turned 87 this year-he's amassed a Rolodex of more than 1,000 contacts, and in this satisfying autobiography, he describes firsthand encounters with Pablo Picasso, Sigmund Freud, Fiorello La Guardia, oil sheikhs, Latin American strongmen and others. Critics might say Rockefeller's not too choosy about the company he keeps; they claim he's "never met a dictator he didn't like." Indeed, he has been roundly criticized for the role he and Henry Kissinger played in persuading the Carter administration to allow the exiled shah of Iran into the U.S., an event widely believed to have sparked the hostage crisis. But this memoir is much more than a titillating account of wealth and international intrigue. Rockefeller also meticulously recounts the modernizing of Chase Bank, where he worked for 35 years, rising to become chairman and chief executive, finally giving the company-which merged with JP Morgan in 2001-a written history on a par with Ron Chernow's The House of Morgan. New York City also dominates here; after Robert Moses, the Rockefeller clan has had the strongest hand in shaping the modern urban landscape, from Wall Street to midtown to Morningside Heights. Indispensable for anyone interested in financial and American history, Rockefeller's well-organized remembrances present a deeply fascinating, thorough look into the life of a living legend. From Library Journal
This autobiography by the youngest son of John D. Rockefeller Jr. and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller is also a history of 20th-century America and its influence in the world order. As David Rockefeller traces his own life (he was born in 1915) with references to the personal and business dealings of his father and grandfather, this history unfolds through his eyes. Chapters on his childhood, teenage years, and relationships with his parents provide insight into his character development and lifestyle. But when he discusses his years at Harvard, the London School of Economics, and the University of Chicago, where he earned his Ph.D. in economics, Rockefeller tells of his meetings with top professors and economists such as Keynes and Schumpeter, commenting on their theories. The account of his travel experience in Nazi Germany during the mid-1930s is compelling. His marriage to Peggy, his time as an intelligence officer in World War II, and his relationships with his brothers in family conflicts, as well as his work with Chase Bank, Rockefeller Center, OPEC, and the Middle East, Latin America, and the World Trade Center, are all discussed in detail. Of particular interest is Rockefeller's epilog discussing 9/11. This very readable and thought-provoking account of an influential financier, philanthropist, and art lover will hold readers' interest. Given the broad sweep of Rockefeller's life, it may be quite popular and in demand in both public and academic libraries. Steven J. Mayover, formerly with the Free Lib. of Philadelphia

From The New Yorker
As a scion of one of America's most powerful families, a globetrotting business "statesman," a former C.E.O. of Chase Bank, and an important player in the development of downtown Manhattan, David Rockefeller is an emblematic figure of a world that no longer really exists: the world of the Wasp ascendancy. An inveterate networker among policymakers, intellectuals, and corporate leaders, he seems to have been driven by an almost naïve faith in noblesse oblige, and there's something refreshingly nineteenth-century about this entertaining memoir as well. Rockefeller's style is restrained and self-deprecating; the account of his attempts to modernize and globalize Chase makes for excellent business history, and his sketch of his complicated relationship with his brothers is especially convincing. What may be most striking, however, is Rockefeller's resolute internationalism and his commitment to institutions like the U.N.—a healthy reminder that there was a time when the Republican Party did not see "multilateralism" as a dirty word.

"The henhouse is safe" assures the Fox
By Raymond Jensen
Mr Rockefeller writes about the Bilderbergs (p. 410), at the "disppointment" of the "conspiracy-mongers" is just an "intensely interesting annual discussion group." Really? Then how come I'm never invited? What's all the secrecy about?

To give you an idea of why all the secrecy, here's an excerpt from a 1991 issue of the Hilaire duBerrier Report (also reported elsewhere in the French press):

"[Rockefeller] told his listeners: 'We are grateful to the Washington Post, The New York Times, Time Magazine, and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost forty years....It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subject to the bright lights of publicity during these years....The supranational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers ... is surely preferable to the national autodetermination practiced in the past centuries.'"

In "Tragedy and Hope" written By Bill Clinton's professor at Georgetown, Carroll Quigley (p. 950) writes:

"There does exist, and has existed for a generation, an international Anglophile network which operates, to some extent, in the way the radical Right believes the Communists act. In fact, this network, which we may identify as the Round Table Group has no aversion to cooperating with the Communists, of any other groups, and frequently does so. I know of the operations of this network because I have studied it for twenty years and was permitted for two years, in the early 1960's, to examine its papers and secret records. I have no aversion to it...but in general my chief difference of opinion is that it wishes to remain unknown, and I believe its role in history is significant enough to be known."

Now why would the "Round Table Group" want to cooperate with the communists? James Kunen, in his "Strawberry Statement: Notes of a College Revolutionary," gives one reason:

"In the evening, I went up to the U. to check out a strategy meeting. A kid was giving a report on the SDS [Students for a Democratic Society] convention. He said that ... at the convention, men from Business International Round Tables, the meeting sponsored by Business International for their client groups and heads of government, tried to buy up a few radicals. These men are the world's leading industrialists and they convene to decide how our lives are going to go. These are the guys who wrote the Alliance for Progress. They are the left wing of the ruling class. They offered to finance our demonstrations in Chicago. We were also offered ESSO (Rockefeller) money. They want us to make a lot of radical commotion so they can look more in the center as they move to the left."

Is this not the reason why most people think George Bush is conservative? Because the liberal hates Bush?

Mr. Rockefeller on p. 405 claims that the "conspiracy theorists" fail to see the "benefit of our international role over the past half century." And what benefits are these? Quigley gives the answer in his book:

"The powers of financial capitalism had a far-reaching plan, nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole."

Now how'd those silly kook populists miss to see the benefit in having a worldwide system of financial control vested in a few plutocrats?

Better editing needed
By Rick Spell
I bought this book to experience the life of David Rockefeller and what it is like to live a life of incredible wealth. In that respect, I did enjoy this book. For example, the Rockefeller kids did not attend an exclusive private grade school. Obviously, his life was still very different from most Americans filled with travel and meeting very famous, intelligent people.
After a very interesting educational career and time served in WWII, Rockefeller works initially as an assistant to the Mayor of NY but eventually begins a long career with Chase Manhattan Bank ending as the Chairman. Here, the book really bogged down. Even though he was raised in a life much different than most Americans, his Chase career was marked by a rivalry with a senior loan officer in a battle for the top spot at the bank. Rockefeller spent this part of the book describing the battle in depth without trying to be critical. Frankly, it was more information than was needed and not really becoming. After his ascension to the top spot, the book describes in detail, probably too much detail, his growth of the bank, his relationships with world leaders, and the problems at the bank that almost cost him his job. And possibly it should have.
The book ends with Rockefeller reflecting on his philanthropic activities and the ultimate dispostion of the Rockefeller Center. I found this section quite interesting.
Overall, I casually enjoyed this book and would recommend it. But it is real time commitment to read and may be considered too boring for many readers. If you are buying this book because you enjoy business biographies, I would not recommend the book as there is no compelling story to tell from a business perspective. It's just a story of a wonderful life from a very wealthy individual who is able to travel in very high circles.

Saladin, by Abdul Rahman Azzam

Like Alexander or Caesar, the name of Saladin – the greatest figure of Islamic history – has a timeless quality. As famous today as he was when he drove the Crusaders out of Jerusalem, the real Saladin has dissolved into legend with each generation’s retelling of his story. Through the ages he has made many numerous appearances in both classic and popular culture: Dante placed him in the first circle of Hell with the heroes of Troy and Rome while Rex Harrison played him as a cad in the film King Richard and the Crusaders. In Youssef Chahine’s epic film Saladin, he emerged as a hero of Arab socialism, and he has even made an appearance in an episode of Dr Who. Even today, Saladin’s historical influence continues with Osama bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and Colonel Gaddafi all claiming to be his military and spiritual heir.

To understand the real Saladin, however, A. R. Azzam argues that we must place him within his historical setting amidst the 10th century Sunni Revival - the powerful and sweeping intellectual renaissance which would ultimately transform every field of Islamic thought. Making a compelling case against accepted orthodoxy, this ground-breaking biography contends that Saladin was not the brilliant military commander of popular imagination but that, in fact, his true greatness lay in his spiritual vision. An honest and guileless leader, Saladin baffled his enemies by refusing to play their political games and succeeded in uniting an army from all parts of the Muslim world without bloodshed. Yet despite being one of the most powerful men in Islam, Saladin died a pauper in 1193 without even enough money for straw to line his coffin.

The first major biography of Saladin for twenty years, and the first by a Muslim historian to appear in English, A. R. Azzam’s timely and fascinating account is essential reading for anyone interested in the medieval Crusades, Islamic history and the origins of the modern Middle East.

"absorbing" - FT Weekend 17 January 2009 (circulation 500,000) "timely and well-written" - Irish News, 10 January 2009 (readership 180,000) "His book is a comprehensive survey not just of the man, but of the age in which he lived" - Edinburgh Evening News, 10 January 2009 (readership 272,000)

"The strength of Azzam's study lies in illuminating Saladin's many connections with Sunni theologians, jurists and teachers, and their mutually reinforcing activities, such as his foundation of numerous madrassas that embedded Sunni orthodoxy among the Egyptian population, but also turned out trained administrators for his growing empire".

From the Back Cover

Saladin was an outsider with a life full of paradoxes. Famed for driving the Crusaders out of Jerusalem, he became the most powerful man in the Islamic Empire. Yet he died penniless, without enough money even to line his coffin.

In this ground-breaking new biography, A. R. Azzam uncovers the real Saladin by placing him in historical context amidst the 10th and 11th century Sunni Revival – the powerful and sweeping intellectual renaissance, which would ultimately transform every field of Islamic thought. Azzam contends that Saladin was not the brilliant military commander of popular imagination but that his true greatness lay in his political and spiritual vision.

This book tells his fascinating and complex story.

Saladin before the Crusade
By Traveling Grandma
This is a scholarly book, which I found rewarding for its lucidity and evenness in tone. The author's thesis is that Saladin's greatest achievement took place before 1185-- before Jerusalem and the Third Crusade. "It was Saladin's restoration of Sunni Islam into Fatimid Shiite Egypt that proved to be his greatest legacy," he states in the Prologue.

In the first ten chapters of the book, we learn about Saladin's political rise, his consolidation of power in Egypt with the support of the inestimable al Qadil al Fadil, and the solid group of advisers and military men that Saladin relied on. The effect of this focus on the men around Saladin-- the various roles they played, religious, military, and administrative--is that it gives a three-dimensional quality to the man himself.

The remaining five chapters of the book deal with Saladin's victory at Hattin and the ensuing Third Crusade, and ending with Saladin's death in Damascus. In the final chapter the author gives an insightful assessment of Saladin, bringing the book full circle to the opening Prologue.

The author has focused his lense on Saladin from a different angle, and from this angle I have learned to appreciate Saladin's achievement off the battle fields and in the realm of religion, namely, Sunni ascendancy.

An eye-opener!
By G. Gensbygel
This is history at its best! Dr Azzam gives a fascinating insight into the life of a man who has been misunderstood and misinterpreted for centuries, and he debunks a lot of the "legend". By putting Saladin into the context of his time, the author gives a thorough insight of the currents, struggles and attitudes of Muslims of today: not a lot of the spiritual struggle has changed, and if we want to comprehend what is going on in the Arab world, today, this book explains a lot of it.
The fascination of the Western world with the crusades is shown in perspective to the Muslim world, which, according to the author has always been far more concerned with the devastation caused by the Mongols than with the struggle with the Christians. This book explains, without specifically saying so, the Arab world's attitude towards the West, especially towards the crass materialism that is trying to force its rule unt6o every other civilization.
A great read!
