This pretty little book is devoted to the very healthy blueberry, an iconic image of Maine, well researched and with excellent photographs. 25% of all blueberries produced in the United States come from Maine.

Better yet, the wild blueberries are significantly better for your health than regular blueberries: "At just 45 calories per 100 grams, or about 71 calories per cup, tiny, potent Wild Blueberries are loaded with antioxidants and pack a serious nutritional punch for every calorie consumed. They are naturally low in fat, high in fiber (25% of your daily value – 2x that of regular blueberries) and have no added sugar, sodium or refined starches. Wild Blueberries are also an excellent source of manganese (200% of your daily value – 8x that of regular blueberries), which is important for bone development. My favorite recipe is a crumble, not a pie, although I have been known to eat blueberry pie as well. With gusto according to other folks!

Ingredients
•4 cups fresh or frozen, thawed blueberries
•1 to 2 tablespoons sugar
•3 tablespoons butter, softened
•5 ounces of soften regular oatmeal or oat groats
maple and brown sugar to taste

Instructions
1.Preheat oven to 375°F
2.In a 9-inch pie plate, toss blueberries with sugar
3.In a small bowl, combine butter and oatmeal until mixture forms coarse crumbs -- don't overbeat
4.Sprinkle over blueberries
5.Bake until mixture bubbles around the edge and topping is light brown, 30 to 35 minutes

Fast Donkey

Clever short story about an unique donkey. If you like feel good stories like the "little engine that could" you'll like this story.

Keep in mind the author is a preteen and in that context it is very clever and well written.

Recommend to any of you with young kids learning to read something more than a picture book.

My only gripe is that the title of the book is a bit misleading "The War Donkey (Strange Short Stories of Irony)" made me believe that it was a collection of stories.

Promising young author

Ryan Smoot has written a charming story about a donkey who strives to be the best, and succeeds, giving snobbery a proper drubbing in the process. His story is generously sprinkled with colloquialisms (which he kindly translates into urban jargon for those who didn't grow up in the country).

If this is what he writes as a pre-teen, I can't wait to see what he writes as an adult! Job well done, Ryan.

Be all that you can be!

This book was written by a youth Author, and was very interesting. He writes in country style, then explains the muddled jargon, so that a, "city slicker can get the jist of it."

Buzz, the donkey(mule)aspires to be something that he isn't and can never be. But he never gives up climbing, trying to achieve his goals. Though he is ridiculed he never wavers. A true inspiration for the youth of today.

Be proud Mr. Smoot, your son seems to have a good head on his shoulders.

I too enjoy countertenor voices tremendously

Although the author is a fluid writer, this book was certainly not what I hoped for. I too enjoy countertenor voices tremendously, and have gotten to know a few fine countertenors. When I saw this book listed, and its subject, I thought this would be right up my alley.
Wrong. It's much more the story of the author's obsession with the singer and their relationship as singer and fan, with the main focus being the author's experiences and feelings. I didn't learn much about James Bowman except in a very scattered way. Disappointing.

a wonderful study of obsession

Burning in Blueness, The Dark-Light of a Countertenor is an account of a passion for the male high voice that began following a BBC radio broadcast in 1972 featuring countertenor James Bowman. The author became devoted to the art of James Bowman and through regular communication and meetings got to know him over ten years. This book is wonderful. The music is discussed in terms of technique, history and content with fascinating insights from professionals and experts. The life and personality of James Bowman is presented in the context of one who understands and has a sense of the man himself.

The real focus of this work is not a specific performer, but rather it is a study of passion for a specific art form. Maxine Handy takes the reader through a land of misty rivers and moonlit churchyards, evoked by the ethereal sound of the countertenor. Classical and spiritual references from both within James Bowman's repetoire and other sources make this a very thought provoking, completely satisfying read.

Surprise for my husband

I had searched everywhere for a replacement for my husband's dictionary. His dictionary had been passed down from his Mother but it was falling apart. After many tapings, the spine and pages would not stay together. I went on a search and found a perfect match on Amazon.com. He was shocked and very happy that I had found a perfect replacement. Charts & Images cannot be enlarged enough to read. They may as well not even be there. Would also be nice to have a menu with a table of contents permitting us to click to the section we want to read.

Shame......because there are some jewels in this book but he lost me when he said Satan will raise Judas from the dead in order to step into the role of end times Antichrist. Yep....in order to reconcile his endtimes view he has endowed Satan with the power to raise the dead which therefore alludes to him also having the keys to hades.....which we know he doesn't. He completely disregards many verses and Christianity 101 that GOD is the only One who can raise people from the dead.

This book is so simple and so profound, I love it.

I work with school food service throughout California with my business partner Georgeanne Brennan. We teach cooking from scratch and other strategies to improve school meals. I ordered this book as soon as I heard about it. As soon as it came I read it cover to cover. For anyone passionate about this work, as I am and have been for 12 years now, this is a must read. It makes you feel sane, that we can create a paradyme shift in what we feed our children at school. I'm going to suggest it as recommended reading to all our community-based clients, school district food service directors - both the early adopters and those that are appropriately cautious knowing they have to meet a bottom line or they haven't done their job. This book provides support to school boards as well, who in the end, have to create the kind of policy environment which supports school food service directors taking the risks involved in changing out their meal service. Kate Adamick has penned a masterpiece in my view. She walks you through the savings potential step by step. As I said to Georgeanne, this is what we've been doing intuitively for several years now, Kate has brilliantly provided us with the exact tool we needed at this time in working with a few reluctant to change districts in communities that are demanding change now. Thank you Kate, thank you for applying your talent and street smarts to this topic so many of us care so deeply about.

This book is a game changer.

This book is a game changer. An established chef and authority on school food describes her own journey to understanding that we don't have to choose between healthy school food and cost-effectiveness. Author "Chef Kate" Adamick shows how any school meal service director can get started right now. But the book is not only for school meal service directors--it's a huge shout out for anyone--school food service workers, parents, principals, children, medical professionals, philanthropy, policy advocates, and companies throughout the food system "value chain"--who are wondering how to overcome our nation's childhood obesity epidemic while also fostering values of education, community and environmental sustainability--and containing cost! The book is an invitation to get involved and be creative. Personally, I read it because of work with philanthropists that are interested in how they might finance schools to more quickly "re-tool" for scratch cooking or to help schools retool when grant money is not available for this purpose. While financings always have to be carefully thought through on a case-by-case basis, the savings discussed offer a promising means to repay modest upfront loans for better stoves, cooling and other equipment--or staff training. All around, the book could not be more positive in pointing the direction for how all of us--both in schools and out--can be part of the solution in creating healthier kids through healthier school meals. This is a critical message, given how much of our children's food is eaten in school or influenced by what happens there.

Ultra helpful in forging the way to school food reform

This well thought out and organized handbook provides practical tools which can be used in discussions with parents, teachers and administrators as they navigate the complex and individualized path to school food reform.
I've already started using the worksheets to help schools in Western CO see where their dollars are going and improve their bottom line.

The Breakfast in the Classroom calculations are a real eye opener for those trying to decide if it is an option for them. The schools who have embraced BIC have not only been able to operate in the black, they also have great stories of happy teachers whose kids are focused and present, every day! The easy to use worksheets provide the documentation your administrators will require!

After calculating the additional cost of chocolate milk and deciding to eliminate it for cost & health reasons, one WA school found an added bonus of the teachers remarking on the lack of afternoon 'sugar low' after lunch and improved student attention span.

A must read for all school Food Service Directors who are thinking about change or are in the midst of the transition.

About the Author
Flavio Faloci was born in Rome, Italy in 1965, and resides in Genova (Genoa) not far from the house of Christopher Columbus. His life-long connection with the sea began several generations ago. His grandfather was a tall ship captain and ship owner, as were several generations before his grandfather. Flavio began sailing Optis and building models by age ten. He is a sailing instructor for dinghies and cruising keelboats with the Centor Velico Caprera, the largest sailing/seamanship school in the Mediterranean. Flavio has worked as a yacht surveyor, yacht designer, and is currently employed as a naval architect at the head office of the Registro Italiano Navale, which is the Italian equivalent of the American Bureau of Ships (ABS). He has also been team captain and chief designer of the Trieste Waterbike Team, current holder of the Guinness record for longest distance covered in 24 hours.

Very nice book with clear explanation how to do this. I have only one comment. The plans are not 1:1. According to instruction, page 44 "cut-out templates (sheets #3, 4, 5). Make photocopies of the templates before you cut if you want to keep your plans pages intact." Probably the plans were made by Flavio on the paper-size A3, resized to A4 for book withe additional margins. To do correct size we need resized the photocopy about 159%. (A4->A3, 141% is not enough).
