If you have a minivan and want to camp, this is a quick, low cost way to start. Excellent book.

This book is going to piss some people off.
Some people think you need to spend a lot of money to go traveling around in an RV. Some people think if you want to convert a minivan into a vehicle that will take you camping you need to spend a lot of time building and converting stuff and that you need a lot of construction skills and tools and materials. Some people think if you want to hit the open road, there are a ton of things stopping you from doing that. Well, this book is going to piss those people off.

Bill Myers wrote using his own personal experiences and knowledge,a small but very thorough illustrated book showing everybody you don't need a lot of time, money, building skills or experience to convert a minivan and go traveling the country in low cost comfort.

Bill is a full time writer and has a lot of experience with full size motorhomes, in fact he wrote one of the best books on buying and selling used motorhomes. He travels in RVs a lot. He decided to trade in his $100,000 dollar motorhome and try stealth camping with a small converted minivan, in this case, a Toyota sienna. Bill bought off the shelf items that fit perfectly in his converted van and hit the road. He claims you can meet your bare bones basic needs for about $200 and provides the facts and figures. I looked at them. They add up.

If you want to spend three months of weekends messing with plywood and screws and glue and paint and upholstery and convert your minivan into a unique, impressive and custom interior, go right ahead, that is fun for a lot of people. However, If you already have a minivan and $200 and just want to hit the open road and scan the far horizon and don't want or can't spend a lot of time and money building stuff, and need a few ideas to get you started on your journey, this is the book for you. Buy it and go.

Before I read the book I was thinking about getting a Pontiac Vibe to convert, but after reading Bill's book I am looking into the Toyota Siennas.

Solid information, but a very narrow in scope.

This is a quick overview of equipment needed to outfit a minivan into a makeshift camper. There are quite a few other books out there on the subject of living out of your vehicle, and this is one of the better ones. It stands out from the rest of the pack by recommending specific products. So instead of writing, "Get a collapsible cot," and leaving you to spend hours comparing different cots, the author specifically recommends the Ridgeline III Cot and shares the reasons behind his choice. This approach takes a lot of the guess-work out of outfitting your vehicle. "Here is what the author settled on, it costs X amount of dollars and can be found at stores Y and Z." Some other things that sets this book apart from the rest are the liberal use of photographs, and that the setup the author recommends can easily be reverted in less than hour.

Since this booklet is so concise, the author only takes a cursory look at the realities of living in the vehicle. Parking and toiletry are discussed, but only in passing. Meals, bathing, condensation, or receiving mail without a fixed address are not covered at all. These are important subjects to understand before one takes the plunge into van dwelling, and their absence makes this guide feel incomplete. I also wished the author would have covered more permanent modifications, such as wiring up a second battery or installing solar panels. The information that is covered is done so very thoroughly, but subjects that are left out make this feel like the first half of a longer guide.

A Paint-By-The-Numbers Guide To Transforming Your Minivan

This book will save you MONTHS of trial-and-effort work in finding a van, converting it to something you can use to camp, and finding places to park without being hassled. This is a paint-by-the-numbers book that shows you exactly what to buy, including links to the vendors to get the best price, and how to use these items to transform your van into a camper. And the camper conversion solves one of the issues especially concerning to me and my wife: on the road security. When you transform a minivan into a camper, you can operate in "stealth" mode, and become less of a target to predators. Highly recommended!

The Book Every Artist Should Have On Their Bookshelf

This is the best book I've come across in my reading and researching on business topics for artists. No book is perfect, the be all end all, magic trick to make you famous and successful and no book can be. You have to do the work and this book is a perfect guide.

I found the chapter on Estate and Gift Planning very helpful and entertaining with stories and examples of famous artists who's estates almost wound up in disaster because of their shoddy estate planning - it also goes into Gift Tax planning and your art as taxable valuable property and why.

The chapter on Copyright was right on target. This is a comprehensive subject and admittedly this book was written in the late 90's before artists were really considering the internet a serious issue but the laws still apply.

Such a valuable book. Read it cover to cover and use it as a reference as well.

A fascinating melange of historical names and events.

What an absolute joy of a book. Goldsmith seems to have found the perfect centerof the femininist storm in Victoria Woodhull, an outspoken advocate of women's rights, free love, and spiritualism. The telling of her tale (and this book reads like a plotted novel) involves the inclusion of tales and talk from Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Henry Ward Beecher, President Ulysses S. Grant, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, and cameo appearances from a host of others (including the prudish New York City "in"fighter, Anthony Comstock). Much of the telling involves the infamous Tilton-Beecher scandal, a story whose recitation touches on much of the post-Civil War atmosphere of spiritualism,financial skullduggery, the new religious practices of revised Calvinism, and, of course, equal rights for women. This is a fascinating read and wonderfully written. You don't need to be a history buff to pick this up.

A Treasure Chest of Fascinating, Little-Known History

Goldsmith has done a real service with this book. It is more or less the history of the 19th-century women's suffrage movement, with special emphasis on the influence of Spiritualism and on the life of Victoria Woodhull (of whom I had never before heard, even though I regard myself as fairly well-versed in American history).
The book is full of fascinating characters and events, most of which are given unconscionably short shrift in our educational system. Goldsmith fleshes out the stories and personalities of many people who were previously just vague images in my mind, such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Henry Ward Beecher. It seems from this book that female suffrage could have occurred as much as 50 years earlier than it did, if it hadn't been for a couple of missteps on the part of the supporters of suffrage. For one thing, there was a bitter division among the suffragettes about whether the female right to vote should be part of the movement for enfranchising the recently freed slaves. Sadly, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, despite her many wonderful and even heroic contributions to the movement, comes across as an out-and-out racist on this issue, and probably damaged the very cause to which she devoted her life. Secondly, some of the foremost spokespeople for female suffrage got caught up in unrelated, controversial issues, and even in personal sexual scandals.
If you have an interest in American history, you may very well have the same reaction I did while reading this book. Almost every other page, I found myself exclaiming, "Hey, I didn't know that! How come that's not in any of the history books?"
The only reason I gave this book four stars instead of five is that I think the organization and focus could be a little better. The book isn't organized strictly chronologically, and it jumps from one character to another without apparent reason.
But there's just too much really good stuff here to give anything less than four stars, and I have no quarrel with those who have given it five. You won't often pick up a book written for a general audience and learn so many interesting facts that you probably didn't know.

Exciting, disturbing, well-presented history/biography!

This book is huge at 560 pgs; of course, i guess that's nothing compared to these past couple Harry Potters so perhaps i should just say, "substantial." It covers literally Woodhull's entire life (and a good deal of her sister's, Tennessee Claflin), as well as offering am in-depth view of the political and social climate at the time. It devotes a particular amount of time to the changing nuances of her "free love" doctrine and other participants in that movement (one which was, most certainly, ahead of its time--we don't generally think of Victorian times and Free Love in the same boat these days), and the Beecher-Tilton adultery trial.
I found the book to be facinating from a suffrage-history POV, contrasting events depicted/documented within with my memories of the "women's movement" from history classes. Goldsmith isn't afraid to throw stones (mostly by quoting their own less than tolerant words) at suffrage icons Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B Anthony, and others, in the course of depicting an unbiased view of the debate that raged for both women's and black men's suffrage at the time. She is both sympathetic to Victoria and Tennessee (she does a very good job in depicting the bizarre, abusive, nomadic carnival-like nature of their childhoods and family life while growing up), and willing to point out their flaws and transgressions (both women engaged in prostitution, blackmail, and other acts of "questionable ethics").
There's not as much focus on the Spiritualism movement, though the overview is thorough and the author depicts in great detail the ways in which Victoria and Tennessee were involved in it as trance speakers and predictors of the future, both from a very young age. She presents the oracles and visions and claims of spiritualists without passing judgement on them, though it's hard not to do so onesself as a modern skeptic reader--the descriptions of Victoria's frequent "possession" by spirit guides, particularly when speaking in public and in other stressful situations, coupled with her traumatic childhood, are reminiscent of depictions of modern dissociative identity disorders.
To read the book as a modern woman is somewhat horrific; one can't help but think along the lines of "what would I have done back then," when Anthony Comstock was arresting people for even discussing contraception and women were considered the property of their husbands. Goldsmith investigates a lot of related issues, giving brief synopses of cases of abortionists, midwives, spinsters-by-choice, servant-class mothers of illegitimate children who were imprisoned for "infanticide" when their babies died in childbirth...ugh. Horrible reading, but important.
All in all a facinating overview of activism, alternative spirituality, and the tumultuous political climate of post-civil-war America, centered around the life story of the country's first female Presidential candidate.

About the Author
Arthur Sze has published eight books of original poetry, including The Ginkgo Light (2009), Quipu (2005), and The Redshifting Web, as well as one book of Chinese poetry translations, The Silk Dragon (2001). The Ginkgo Light was selected for the PEN Southwest Book Award and the Mountains & Plains Independent Booksellers Association Book Award. He is the recipient of many honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing fellowships, a Howard Foundation fellowship, and grants from the Witter Bynner Foundation for Poetry. His poems have been translated into a dozen languages, including Chinese, Dutch, and Spanish. A second-generation Chinese American, Sze was born in New York City and currently resides in Sante Fe, New Mexico. He was the first poet laureate of Sante Fe (2006-2008) and is currently a professor emeritus at the Institute of American Indian Arts. In 2012, he joined the Board of Chancellors at the Academy of American Poets.

Incredible imagery. Arthur has a fascinating way of blending observation and emotion. His words are like getting into a boat and drifting down stream, seeing a moving landscape that is both horrifying and wonderful at the same time.

A Worthwhile, Thoughtful Poetry Collection

Arthur Sze's Compass Rose is a solid poetry collection. Sze uses multiple ideas and many strong images within a poem. This forms each poem into a coherent idea. His thoughts breeze up in the poems, even though they must have taken a lot of planning. This collection is complex and yet understandable. It is a poetry book I will keep and revisit many times.

About the Author

Dr. Jerome J. Connor is Professor of Civil Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research interests include computational mechanics, structural analysis, motion based structural design, and novel design methodologies for structural systems and has taught courses in computational mechanics and structural engineering. In recent years Connor’s work has involved motion based design and damage assessment of engineering materials and he is directing a number of projects related to the applications of structural control to large civil structures as well as investigating methods to quantify damage in engineering materials.

Dr. Susan Faraji has been Professor of Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell since 1984. Dr. Faraji has close to three decades of teaching, research, publication, and consulting experience and has taught a wide range of courses at the undergraduate and at the graduate level, such as Concrete Design, Steel Design, Bridge Design, Seismic Design, Concrete Design, Finite Elements, Structural Dynamics, and Behavior of Structures. Her professional work involves the analysis, design (using the latest design codes), and computer modeling of a wide range of structures. She has worked on more than 30 bridges and on aircraft, elevators, pontoons, ramps, concrete parking garages, domes, culverts, retaining walls, and steel and concrete frame buildings.
