Just as the Nazi Holocaust incinerated naive assumptions about human nature and historical progress, so the flaming collapse of the World Trade Center in 2001 shattered assumptions about status quo, religion, and peace.

Those of us who inquire into the history of the world's religions soon become aware that from the perspective of some of the religions the study of history is bound to be fruitless. Religions are about "what matters most" and to some that means transcending the temporal and in effect abandoning the search for meaning in the historical scene. Picking up a book like this may signify a desire to confirm that view, but it is more likely to signify a kind of bias, an underlying hope that the transcendent/immanent may indeed manifest itself in historical events—that the study of any religion should include its historical influence in social/political arenas as, for example, ethical policy in regard to the earth's resources and the degree to which all of humankind is in its purview. Given our biases, our best course is to try to present the views of others fairly. Will knowledgeable believers find our characterizations accurate?

Resisting trends toward the abbreviating and "dumbing down" of college textbooks to accommodate diminished reading skills, this edition maintains a standard of thoroughness. Instead of abridgement, it offers enhancements: highlighted terms keyed to chapter-end glossaries, reinforcement of key ideas in color-framed quotations, line drawings to relieve solid columns of text, and the inclusion of some novels and light reading suggestions in the bibliography.

but am still happy that I took the course on world religion

I was required to take a class on religion as a prerequisite for a nursing program I applied to. I ended up choosing a different program, but am still happy that I took the course on world religion. The course, and this book especially, opened my eyes about many of the world's religions. It made me a more open-minded person, and taught me a lot about religion and culture. The lessons I learned from this book and class are priceless. I truly think the world would be a better place if everyone read this book and developed a bigger level of understanding about different faith backgrounds.

This book will fall apart just looking at it.

Paperback binding looks like it was glued by a preschooler. (Previous repair?) Cover and pages are loose, creased, slight tearing around all edges, dog ears on every corner, markings, found post it's still sticking out of the sides of the book!!!! This book should not have been rented out again. It should have been replaced with a stronger book.

Between the two world wars, free ballooning was practiced for sport and science. Each year aeronauts (lighter-than-air pilots) from the United States and Europe would compete in an international race to determine who could fly the farthest. The U.S. Navy eagerly participated in these events, and one of its officers, Thomas G. W. "Tex" Settle, would become world famous for his wins. The only airman in his time qualified to pilot a free balloon, blimp, glider, and airplane, and to command a rigid airship, Settle was also the first American to fly a pressurized cabin into the stratosphere. This book tells the story of Settle and Navy ballooning during the Golden Age of Flight against the backdrop of the American naval airship program. J. Gordon Vaeth captures the excitement, enthusiasm, and tragedies of this little-known aspect of naval aviation and the colorful personalities who pioneered the program. It is a story that lapses during the war years, but resumes full force in the mid-1940s when two Lakehurst air station officers, Harris F. Smith and William J. Gunther, revived it with their flights. M. Lee Lewis and Malcolm D. Ross followed. Taking advantage of the new plastic balloon technology, they initiated a series of manned scientific flights into the stratosphere. For the armchair reader the author vividly conveys what it was like to fly in a wicker basket under a bag filled with flammable gas in all kinds of weather. An excellent collection of photographs illustrate the text.

Retired naval officer and lighter-than-air veteran Vaeth offers a valuable and concise summary of the U.S. Navy's efforts to fly while buoyed by gas. The great dirigibles, of which four out of five crashed, have been the primary focus of previous similar accounts, and they are clearly and cogently dealt with here. Less covered have been the nonrigid airships, whose story began with a class of vehicles based on a British design; these served ably in World War I. The interwar period was followed by a veritable renaissance of blimps and of training men to fly them during World War II. Naval blimps pretty much died out after the war, but the swan song of U.S. Navy lighter-than-air use, the high--altitude endurance flights of Project Strato-Lab, ceased only with the coming of space flight. Besides all this, Vaeth even notes naval officers flying in balloon races, among them his friend the late Thomas Settle, who once held a world high-altitude record. Roland Green

The Semi-Official Complete Story

The Navy has a need for very slow speed aircraft with the ability to stay over the fleet, protecting it from submarines and providing the ability to see much further than from the top of the mast. The first reauirement was issued by Admiral 'Jackie' Fisher of Britain's Royal Navy. He got the airship he wanted in 18 days. The United States Navy followed these developments closely and soon ordered sixteen similar units. These began lighter than air flights that lasted until 1962 with a total of hundreds of craft.

This book gives a complete description of all of the Navy operations from the first free flying balloon (used for training for the first airships) to the airships, blimps and finally the research balloons flown just before John Glenn's historic ride into space.

This book is published by the Naval Institute press. They do a supurb job of providing well researched, well reviewed books. This one is no exception.

UP - UP & AWAY!

IN A NUTSHELL: A CHRONICLE OF THE U.S. NAVY'S AIRSHIP EFFORT

Though the story starts out slowly, mostly about balloon races and small advances made prior to the official Navy effort, "THEY SAILED THE SKIES" does get down to some high-flying action, starting with the Hindenburg disaster.

THERE'S MORE:

Detailed accounts of the U.S. Navy's expanded program for convoy security, U-boat spotting, sea-rescue spotting and much more are covered under the section on World War 2. Also, the interesting evolution and development of the non-rigid airships, "G", "K", "L" & "M" are illustrated nicely and described somewhat comparitively, which I really wanted more of, along with accounts of the 'blimp at war'.

BOTTOM LINE: NICE READER - SOME INTERESTING WORLD WAR 2 BLIMP INSIGHTS

A short interesting read, very nice to sail away with for a few hours.

Completely non-European paradigms of financing, transportation, societal norms, and creating wealth.

I totally disagree with the first reviewer. This is a fine book, on a time and place that few people know much about, which makes it important. Obviously well researched, it is also well written. No, of course it's not a novel! Whoever said it was? It's a study in Islamic capitalism at about the time of Shakespeare, when Europe had gotten started on capitalism, but had not yet attained its breakthrough to industrial production and marketing. We know much more about European mercantilism than we do about that of the Middle East. This pioneering book helps fill the gap, and does so by focusing on a single individual merchant, operating under completely non-European paradigms of financing, transportation, societal norms, and creating wealth.
The book could in some ways be read as a novel, since it is about one person in a strange society, and in my view this simply shows what a good book it is. When you can even imagine a historical work as a story, then the author has done a good job. If you want a vision of what a non-European model of trade might be, this book will help you attain that.

Not entirely engaging, but informative

This book describes the life of a merchant (Abu Taqiyya) and some details about his family. You see how he traded, where he traveled, how he negotiated, etc. Also, you see how his family was affected by Abu's merchant lifestyle. It's informative cultural history. But, it's a little slow.
The details sometimes get a little too detailed. It's not a sweeping novel, by any means. This was written by a scholar, so expect to see more detail and analyzation than you would in say, a historical fiction novel.
The book does its job -- teaching you about merchant culture in 17th century middle east. It's just not a "fun" book compared to most.

Fabulous Insight to Transgender Life

I devoured this book over three days. I could not put it down as Bobbie Thompson has a great storytelling ability. Her journey from somewhat closed-minded woman in a small town to blossoming into being open and accepting to all walks of life was wonderful. I think each chapter was delivered perfectly in a way to help the reader understand each step of the way.

Well written with a great delivery, it helped me to understood why Bobbie felt the way she did at first and why she changed her point of view. This is a great read for anyone wanting to understand the life, culture and diverse world of transgender. I highly recommend this book if you are what you would consider a "normal person" struggling to understand others who are different. Not just transgender, but people with different thoughts, sexualities and ways of living. Likewise it's the perfect read for anyone who is transgender and wants to understand the learning process of those not born trans.

A perfect companion book to her spouse's. I would recommend having both on the coffee table at all times for anyone who stops by for a visit!

Funny, Enlighting, Provocative

Loved reading her story! Bobbie tells you from her perspective what it's like to find out that someone she knew most of her life, engaged in an intimate affair with for several years then eventually married was actually a woman! Her country charm and beliefs seriously put to the test when she see's a "man in a dress" for the first time, explained as only she can explain. Relationships put into question, love questioned, even life questioned. She explains how she came to understand it all, work through it all and accept it all. Anyone wanting to know what it's like as a spouse to come to terms with your spouse not being who you thought they were, or you just want some good information told in a funny, witty "southern charm" kinda way, then read this book! It's a great companion book to her spouses book, "Hung In The Middle", by Alana Nicole Sholar.

I loved this story!

I loved this story and felt like I really got to know Bobbie through reading it.

This is a fantastic memoir to introduce people to the experience of coming to terms with and supporting a transgender person. While it was a little hard to read the judgments and thoughts Bobbie had about Alana when she first realized Alana was presenting as female, it's absolutely integral to the story. It allows the reader to see Bobbie as a real person, with real, not-so-pretty thoughts, and identify with her. Bobbie then uses that rapport with the reader to show them a path to loving and supporting the transgender people in their life.

As transgender people become more visible, stories like Bobbie's will be invaluable to help eliminate fear of the unknown and help people come to terms with the fact that the world is different than they might have thought.

The book could have used a little more editing, but I give it 5 stars regardless because the message of the story is 5-star worthy.

Professor of management at Assumption College, in Worcester, Massachusetts. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an MBA at the Cass School of Business, City University, London. She has had expatriate assignments in Germany, the UK, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Korea. Her interests include the role of culture in international business and the pedagogy of international management. Her publications include The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Management. Vol. VI: International Management, 2nd ed., Oxford, UK: Blackwell Publishing (2005); and The Blackwell Handbook of Global Management, Oxford, UK: Blackwell Publishing (2004). Her teaching, research and presentations have received many awards, including The Roethlisberger Best Paper of the Year Award from the Journal of Management Education and the Alpha Phi Alpha Teacher of the Year Award. Her articles have been included in journals and collections focused on teaching in the area of international business. She is an avid master rower and enjoys running, reading, and gardening.

Professor of marketing and international business at the University of Texas, Pan American. He was educated at the University of North Carolina, American University, and Cornell and holds a PhD from Vanderbilt University. His research focuses on comparative consumer behavior, international marketing strategy, political risk, and the consumption of high-technology experiential products. Great for school

Received this when I was in school. Amazon rent is probably the best place to get the books you need. Grant it they do not have all the books you will need but most of them they will. I was even able to find some that my instructors said that I may have an issue finding. Amazon rent saved me a ton of money and I recommend it for any and everyone in school. If you are going to be a little late on your return they can extend your rental for a low fee with out having to buy the book at full cost returning the books are easy as well. This in itself should inspire folks to get out there and get their degree.

One of my favorite textbooks

This is probably one of the best textbooks I have used. The book is well-written and easy to follow. There are a lot of current examples used to illustrate the points made. Each chapter ends with a short bio of a student or professional who works in an international position. The only negative is that all of the persons interviewed graduated from the same university. What are the authors implying to say - is not clear.
Not sure who said this book is practical. What where which chapter ? Do they know meaning of word practical .

The books has just theory - no real life applicable example. No direct answers - Just too much random information cramped.

Shane on the authors and publisher. In the name of knowledge and guidance- it just a show off or random pictures and ideas.

Surprisingly revealing of Luther Burbank's feelings for all creations in nature. His passion for all things that grow and complete the life/death cycle and his desire to help humans be the best they can be may have been misunderstood by some. He was not the product of academia. He was the passionate, genuine "amateur" meaning he could no more live without experimenting to improve everything that he attempted to grow any more than Thomas Jefferson could have lived without book. I consider the book a perfect guide written by a professional for professionals. If you are looking for scientific completeness and complication, go somewhere else. If you are looking for a competent down-to-earth reference, this is your book. I wonder when the third edition of this valuable tool will be published.

excellent non-mathematical primer

I work in the securities industry, and this book accurately described the markets and products without the detailed mathematics. I would recommend this book as a first reading before the Hull and White book which is much more mathematical.
Too bad it's out of print. I'd like everyone in my group to have a copy.
