Amazing breadth and a must read for any aspiring or practicing professional photographer

In 56 chapters and about 450 pages this book covers the gamut (no pun intended) of issues of what an aspiring or practicing professional photographer might face on the business side of their practice. Personally I would call it a "must read" along with the two other books mentioned below. While this book does not provide great depth in many areas, it does provide great breadth and quite useful depth. I would recommend "Best Business Practices for Photographers by John Harrington" and "The Professional Photographer's Legal Handbook by Nancy Wolff" as companions for this book to give you greater depth on many of the key areas covered in this book. While long in length, it is generally very quick reading. Highly recommended!

Kindle edition is missing link to table of contents.

This book is required reading for anyone intending to do business in the world of Photography. It also happens to be the required text for a class I'm taking. The class has readings laid out based on sections listed in the table of contents in the print version. The table of contents in the Kindle edition under Menu > Table of Contents (while reading the book) is grayed out. The table of contents does exist though but you have to hunt for it. Go the beginning and page forward until you find it. A bit inconvenient.

My experience with using the Kindle 2 for course texts has taught me not to, yet. Perhaps the DX provides a better textbook experience but the price point is too steep.

About the Author
Timothy A. Judge is the Matherly-McKethan Eminent Scholar, Department of Management, Warrington College of Business, University of Florida. Prior to receiving his PhD at the University of Illinois, Tim was a manager for Kohl’s department stores. Tim has also served on the faculties of Cornell University and the University of Iowa. Tim’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of personality, leadership and influence behaviors, staffing, and job attitudes. He serves on the editorial review boards of Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. Tim is a former program chair for the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and past chair of the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management. Tim is Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Society for the Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and in 1995 he received the Ernest J. McCormick Award for Distinguished Early Career Contributions from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. In 2001 he received the Cummings Scholar Award for the Academy of Management.

Herbert G. Heneman III is the Dickson-Bascom Professor Emeritus in the Management and Human Resources Department, School of Business, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also serves as a senior researcher in the Wisconsin Center for Educational Research. Herb has been a visiting faculty member at the University of Washington and the University of Florida, and he was the University Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Ohio State University. His research is in the areas of staffing, performance management, compensation, and work motivation. He is currently investigating the design and effectiveness of teacher performance management and compensation systems. Herb is on the board of directors of the Society for Human Resource Management Foundation, and serves as its director of research. He is the senior author of three prior textbooks in human resource management. Herb is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, the American Psychological Association, and the Academy of Management. He is also the recipient of the career achievement award from the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management.

Horrible Book

This is the worst text book I have ever had. The organization is terrible, the layout is dull. There are no little breakaways with information, vocabulary in the margin, no colors, little distinctions between different types of information. I counted one paragraph with 19, NINETEEN, lines. Chapters are long as well, sometimes 40 or 50 pages. It is just gobs of information slapped on a page without any thought to how readers absorb information or just the presentation of information in general. I hated it.

Dull and flat textbook...

As another reviewer mentioned, this was a dull, flat text book. Long chapters with little in way of layout and presenting important information. To be fair with regards to this book review, I could not get past the first two chapters, so maybe it got better had I continued. I ended up postponing taking this course in hopes that when I attempt to take it again next year that the instructor will have changed books by then.

I do not give 5 stars easily, but this is a good one

The book is really very complete. Both I and my students appreciate its value as text and reference (one of my students had gotten the book electronically for the semester, and afterwards, told me she would ask for a paper copy for Christmas). I built a talent management class mostly around the book, mainly adding some outside case materials. I do not give 5 stars easily, but this is a good one.

Hilarious Words That Don't Appear in the Dictionary But Should

I first remember hearing about Sniglets from Rich Hall on TV. I think he was doing guest spots on David Letterman's daytime show back in the early 1980s. "Sniglets" are basically words that don't appear in the dictionary but should. Rich Hall has compiled an entire book of these, and they've provided me with a lot of humor over the years.

Believe it or not, at the classical Christian school at which I teach, I have one of the students write the Sniglet for the day on the board. I've also had students try to come up with their own Sniglets, and then I let them write them on the board (if they're any good).

A few good examples of Sniglets are the following: Bleemus (blee' mus) - n. The disgusting film on the top of soups and cocoa that sit out for too long.

Blithwapping - v. Using anything BUT a hammer to hammer a nail into the wall, such as shoes, lamp bases, doorstops, etc.

Doork (dawrk) - n. A person who always pushes on a door marked "pull" or vice versa.

Hozone (ho' zohn) - n. The place where one sock in every laundry load disappears to.

My favorite use of a Sniglet word came just a week or two ago. The class had seen the word "spratchet" on the board, which is the made up name for the piece of plastic that's used to divide one shopper's items from another in a grocery store. I kept telling my high school class that we ought to all begin using the word "spratchet" and see if it catches on. I'm not sure if any of them ever took my suggestion. But a week or two ago I was in WalMart with my son when I dared him to ask the woman in front of us to please pass the spratchet. He wrestled with the idea for more than a minute and finally mustered up the nerve (after some prodding from me).

He calmly pointed to the spratchet and said to the woman, "Would you please pass the spratchet?" Without missing a beat, she calmly passed the spratchet. Maybe she was just being friendly and maybe she was just too embarrassed to admit that she didn't know those things were called spratchets.

This is only one example of the practical fun you can have with Sniglets, in addition to simply reading them and passing them around with your friends. Sniglets is highly recommended for group reading. Try it!

About the Author
Gennaro Contaldo worked in several restaurants around the UK and in London, where he eventually opened the award-winning Passione. He came to public attention as the chef who inspired Jamie Oliver when they worked together at Antonio Carluccio's Neal Street restaurant. In Spring 2011 he co-presented Two Greedy Italians on BBC2 with Antonio Carluccio, and in spring 2012 a second series, Two Greedy Italians Still Hungry, was broadcast. He is the author of several cookbooks, including Gennaro's Italian Year, Let's Cook Italian, and Passione.

If you are very interested in Italian recipes, this is a decent one for your collection.
By I Do The Speed Limit
There are about 100 recipes in this book: Soups, pasta, stews, roasts, "savory bakes", light dishes, even leftovers. There are bread recipes, cakes, desserts and the book ends with preserves. There are several topics in the list that I just rattled through that pique my interest: Preserves, soups, savory bakes, leftovers and stews.

Note: "Slow Cook", not slow cooker, not crock pot. But, that is not to say Gennaro ignores the slow cooker. On the contrary, while he does not use one at home, he does include separate instructions for using one for some of the recipes. (Be aware though, that you are going to have stove-top cooking to complete before placing food into the slow cooker. So, there are no recipes here that you can plop into the cooker at 5 a.m. before you leave for your commute to work....)

If you are wondering who this guy is: The author, Gennaro Contaldo, had a hand in teaching Jamie Oliver about Italian cooking.

To be honest with you: The publisher was looking for reviews of this book, but only allowed me to glimpse about 40 pages of it. So my four-star rating is based on what I did see. It does look interesting though, with plenty of beautiful photographs, easy-to-read page layouts, and a decent representation of foods from different regions in Italy (not only southern Italy where he and his family are from).

It appears that there is a photo to go with each recipe. Recipe instructions are straightforward. Ingredient lists are not too long, and include both metric and imperial measurements. There is a decent 5-page index.

Gennaro makes the most of inexpensive cuts of meat, dried beans, peas and lentils. In addition to the usual meats--lamb, pork, beef--Gennaro includes game birds and animals. Be aware that Gennaro includes veal shin/knuckle/ossobuco in his list of "cheap" cuts of meat. Where I live, that is one of the most expensive meats in the butcher case......

I was excited to see a pork stew among the recipes I was allowed to see. (I often buy a large pork butt roast and cube it up, divide it up, and freeze portions.) Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the results. It was good--don't get me
wrong--but, it was not spectacular or unusual. (It contained carrot, onion, celery, potato, frozen peas, sage.)

Here are some others I've tried over the past few months:
--A beautiful lasagna with slow-cooked vegetables in a white sauce: Celery, carrot, turnip, pumpkin, mushrooms and more.
--A Tyrolean beef stew gently simmered for two hours with garlic, onions, cumin, paprika and thyme. (Includes slow cooker directions.)
--A roast leg of lamb with white wine, onions, olives, garlic, anchovy and peas. It is a spectacular presentation!

Some recipes I read about, but did not see ingredient lists or instructions for:
--Boozy baked chicken with peppers
--The Italian classic La Genovese, which is beef with onions
--Summer vegetable stew

I like food. I like Italian food and I like to cook. i also like this cook book. The recipes are clear and easy to follow. The Osso Buco is to die for! A good addition to amy cook book collection.

A fabulous ride on the wild side of life and love sometimes gone wrong.

Nicole Lyons' poetry is uniquely imaginative presenting a reflection of both the light and the darkness of life. Her debut book HUSH flows from one poem to the next in a compelling, can't put it down, manner. Her poetry runs the gamut from beautiful love notes ("I Will Love You") to savage memoirs of love lost ("The Night A Blue Moon Burst.") Several of her poems are of critical note for their outstanding imagery and powerful word force. One example is, "The Colour of Us." Every line pulls you deeper into a story told through creative metaphors of love gone wrong that once was right. Another favorite of mine is, "The Bone Keeper," again where I was fascinated by how she can make the ordinary become extraordinary with the free spirit of her word imagery. I predict that HUSH is going to become a favorite among those who treasure original, real, and raw poetry. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to take a walk on the wild side of erotica, life, and love sometimes gone very wrong.

Nicole weaves her past heartache into prose that hugs your soul.

Very few writers have the ability to evoke, justify, or embrace another's personal pain...yet Nicole weaves her own past heartache into prose that hugs your soul, and let's the reader know they are not alone, never alone, in their personal struggles. She writes with a voice that is weathered and strong and packed with experiences that she lovingly shares. This is a book to be read time and time again.

Hush has left me hushed

I had to put this book aside for a few days and reread it before attempting a review. I still can't do it. No words are good enough. Somehow a book of poetry clearly written by a hetero woman made this hetero man feel everything she was feeling as if it were my own experience. The title is perfect. Hush. I can't speak after reading this book.
