Excellent!

The Queen of Bedlam is a terrific blend of historical fiction and mystery. Don't get me wrong, Speaks The Night bird is a very good book, but The Queen of Bedlam blows it out of the water. The narrative is consistently compelling. The characters are very well developed, and the mysteries within beg the reader to keep turning pages. I like historical movies, but novels are the prime medium for historical tales, as you really get to live and breathe in that world. On this front, McCammon delivers a wonderful array of historical details, and very vividly paints New York as it was over three hundred years ago.
I don't want to keep going on, because I can only endlessly praise this book. This might be the best book I've read this year. A truly wonderful novel, and a great series, and one I am so very excited to continue, especially given how this one ends. I love McCammon's supernatural stuff, but I'll happily spend time in Matthew Corbett's dangerous and daring world anytime.

Historical facts, language and customes researched and written perfectly

Earlier this year I started perhaps the most enjoyable book series I have read. I wanted to quickly read the second in the series, The Queen of Bedlam, but never seemed to find the time due to other obligations. I have gradually read this book and have completed it. This is the best book I have read this fall.
Again, Mr. McCammon offers a beautifully written story over 600 pages. I travel when I read Mr. McCammon's work...I see the blue sky with clouds floating around, walk the warm and humid streets of New York, feel the fear in the town as the murders ensue, smell some unpleasant smells and hear the voices of characters I will never know in real life.
The setting is per-Revoluntary war, early seventeen hundreds. Our hero, protagonist Matthew Corbett, has rearranged his life and now lives in Long Island a small town where most everyone knows everyone else or at least a little gossip about everyone else. Matthew has a decision to make and that is whether to continue being a judge's clerk or join a private detective agency.
This novel was more involved with various characters and settings than the first Matthew Corbett novel. There were actually two different puzzles to be solved and Matthew was involved with both. He jumps right in, thinking nothing of his own personal comfort. He is a well respected young man in the community.
I enjoyed this story a lot. Matthew was probably my favorite character in this story. He had some unusual things happen to him and during these happenings he got through them with as much grace as possible. Some of the book had very funny parts. Matthew's character continues to develop and are we seeing him actually becoming interested in the fairer sex? I enjoyed the way Mr. McCammon developed all the characters in this book. There were some odd ones in this story.
Overall this book was well researched and written. It held my interest all the way from page one until the end.
I give The Queen of Bedlam five stars. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good solid story, but especially to lovers of historical fiction.

Matthew Corbett turns P.I.

THE QUEEN OF BEDLAM is the first sequel to the "Matthew Corbett" series first published in 2002 as McCammon's "comeback" smash hit, SPEAKS THE NIGHTBIRD. As TQOB opens, 23 year old Matthew is now a clerk for a Magistrate in 1702 Manhattan, a bustling up and coming metropolis of some 5,000 souls. But his days as a simple clerk come to an end when he draws the attention of Katherine Herrald, the well-to-do, successful widowed owner of a London-based Private Investigator Agency seeking to open an office in the New World. Matthew is hired on a kind of trial basis to discover the identify of and story behind the eponymous "Queen", a mysterious, catatonic woman in a private sanitarium up the Hudson, whose benefactor has her maintained amidst lavish and expensive furnishing from which all identifying marks have been removed, under the care of 2 private physicians who are paid directly from a source in Philadelphia.
Whereas in STN, we are treated to detailed descriptions of everyday life in the 1699 Carolina Colonies, TQOB gives us a similar picture of life in New York when Brooklyn was still spelled Breuckelen and Philadelphia and Boston were the real big cities, with Manhattan still just a few steps up from a village.
The writing is magnificent and the the pace is rapid, even for a long novel. Matthew continues to grow and mature, and, under the tutelage of Herralds parter, Hudson Greathouse, begins to train physically in defensive and offensive arts that will turn out to be key in a lengthy climactic section near the end of the novel.
Once again there are multiple mysteries to be solved, and Matthew continues to sharpen his ability to ask precisely the right questions and to assemble seemingly unrelated facts and occurrences as he slowly builds theories to explain the mysteries he seeks to explain. There are some welcome comic asides that McCammon handles particularly well, but once again, as with STN, this is a straight up historical fiction- mystery story with not a hint of that old McCammon horror. So if you are looking for another SWAN SONG, you will likely be disappointed. But if you are looking for top notch mystery, history and fiction, this is for you. It's on to MISTER SLAUGHTER, the next one in the series for me.
