A family is hunted by a centuries-old monster: a man with a relentless obsession who can take on any identity. The String Diaries opens with Hannah frantically driving through the night--her daughter asleep in the back, her husband bleeding out in the seat beside her. In the trunk of the car rests a cache of diaries dating back two hundred years, tied and retied with strings through generations. The diaries carry the rules for survival that have been handed down from mother to daughter since the nineteenth century. But how can Hannah escape an enemy with the ability to look and sound like the people she loves?Stephen Lloyd Jones' debut novel is a sweeping thriller that extends from the present day to Oxford in the 1970s to Hungary at the turn of the nineteenth century, all tracing back to a man from an ancient royal family with a consuming passion--a boy who can change his shape, insert himself into the intimate lives of his victims, and destroy them.If Hannah fails to end the chase now, her daughter is next in line. Only Hannah can decide how much she is willing to sacrifice to finally put a centuries-old curse to rest.

*Starred Review* Hannah is on the run, her young daughter and her grievously wounded husband depending on her for their own survival. Her destination: a remote farmhouse in Wales, a place where she hopes no one will think to look for her. But, rather than a safe haven, the farmhouse could be her last stand against an evil that has pursued her family for nearly 200 years, an evil that can change its shape and take on the appearance of anyone it chooses . . . like someone Hannah might trust with her life. Told in alternating chapters set in the present day, in the late 1970s (when Hannah’s father met her mother), and in the late 1870s, this is a scary and exciting horror novel that keeps us off-kilter, as we try to figure out what’s going on until we’re so involved in the story that we couldn’t look away even if we tried. Rather than tell us everything we need to know about the history of Hannah’s family at the very beginning of the book, as many writers might have, Jones doles out information a bit at a time, asking us to glean knowledge from dialogue and subtext. This is Jones’ first novel, and you don’t see many debuts more ambitious and memorable than this one. --David Pitt
Review
The String Diaries is an engrossing, mind-bending supernatural tale, and Stephen Lloyd Jones is as exciting a new voice as I've come across in some time, a writer who understands what makes the pulse race -- Michael Koryta, author of Those Who Wish Me Dead Reading The String Diaries made me feel, in the best sense, like a child again. Nothing was more important than the fate of Stephen Lloyd Jones's courageous and very human heroine Hannah Wilde. Meals went uncooked, bills went unpaid, as I waited to find out if she would win freedom for herself and her daughter against the forces of darkness. I was scared, enthralled and amazed by this stunning debut -- Margot Livesey, author of The Flight of Gemma Hardy With The String Diaries, Stephen Lloyd Jones has created a new mythology of the monstrous to rival Stoker's or Shelley's. Grounded in the real world and populated by characters we believe in, this is a book of magic for the doubtful, a fantastic tale for skeptics, at once transporting and convincing -- Andrew Pyper, author of The Demonologist I have never read a book with such frenzied impatience. The String Diaries is unputdownable. Stephen Lloyd Jones has written a debut novel as frightening and layered as Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian and as clever and riveting as Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code -- Benjamin Percy, author of Red Moon I loved this book -- Marcus Sakey, author of Brilliance At once chilling and soulful, this hauntingly powerful tale weaves together the best elements of the psychological thriller, fantasy horror, and historical fiction. Stephen Lloyd Jones has penned a deeply inventive, dazzling debut novel Eliot Pattison, author of Edgar Award-winning The Skull Mantra So gripping you'll want to read late into the night; so terrifying you shouldn't -- Simon Mayo, the Radio 2 Book Club Original, richly imagined and powerfully told Guardian Will keep you awake late into the night SFX

A new very evil breed of monster
By Shannon L. Gardner
I enjoyed this book. I thought the building of a whole new mythology was really amazing. A new breed of monster is refreshing. Not the same old vampire, zombie or werewolf. It is interesting because it is a mix of monster, villain, sociopath, cold blooded killer, evil personified and scary as hell, all rolled into one. The authors character building was fantastic, you really get to know these people, their back grounds and how they are connected to one another. He also writes very strong women characters who are the backbone of these families. The women are the hero's, they try to keep their families safe. His writing reminds me of Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian. If you liked that book you will like this one. The sequel to this book is also out now.

I really wanted to like this book
By Michael A McCormick
I really wanted to like this book. But I really hate the narrative unfolding of events. The first part is really good...trying to understand the mystery. But once you find out, you dont understand why they keep happening. What is Jakab's motivation. He just loves these women? Although the premise is really good...a supernatural being hunting down descendants of the woman he loved, Jakab wasn't fleshed out. Why does he keep hunting them? What made him hunt them down? Even though the perspectives of book changes, I did not feel I knew him well. Or if he was supposed to be mysterious...then why change the perspectives to Jakab and show me his feelings? The middle of the book is the best part, right when the 3 timelines converge and boils over. However, the author takes the easy way out and makes the main protagonist fall apart and make someone else care for her needs, when all along, she was the strong one. I don't get it. Then there's the numerous ways of describing how someone left -- chill up the spine, hammering heart, shaky hands. Yes, I get it...she's nervous...get on with it. I skipped paragraphs just so I can get on with the action and what's the next plot development. Or the description of the surroundings...I get it, the beginning part, it's beautiful -- somewhat gothic descriptions of places, gives you a sense of danger...mysterious dark house, ancient Hungarian places -- it's very atmospheric. But when you're at the end, when people's lives are at stake...and you're describing wheels, and guano, and cogs -- I don't care anymore. I want to understand what's happening.
Hannah is a great character...but her inner monologue is sometimes annoying. I have to be strong for Leah! But she feels a pull of feelings for Gabriel! Loves Nate! Loves her Dad! I wish they were more vague, so we understand that some of her choices is because she's flawed. But when you try to force it to us she has been trained all her life for this upcoming doom and just lays with her daughter for it seemed like a day...leaving her husband on the sofa...doesn't make sense.
Then the finale seems like everything converging into one buffet. I had to keep going back and seeing...now who is this one speaking now? And why is Gabriel here again? Now, why is this Vass guy bad? Wait, he's not bad...oh, maybe he was? Did I skip that paragraph? I didn't understand. Pulled focus on the main story -- Hannah and Leah. Yep, not reading any more of the sequels for me.

What a wonderful, intense
By Gorilichis
What a wonderful, intense, suspenseful novel. It is what the Shining Girls (which I liked but didn't love) should have been. A mystery that unfolds through history, told in several timelines that intersect, a legend come to life and a truly very scary concept... what if your worst enemy could literally turn into your loved ones? How would you know you were safe with your husband, or in mortal peril? With a pulse-quickening last part, and realistic, fleshed out characters (despite this being a fantasy). I am so happy to hear that there is another book coming up, I can't wait to read it.
