Completely non-European paradigms of financing, transportation, societal norms, and creating wealth.

I totally disagree with the first reviewer. This is a fine book, on a time and place that few people know much about, which makes it important. Obviously well researched, it is also well written. No, of course it's not a novel! Whoever said it was? It's a study in Islamic capitalism at about the time of Shakespeare, when Europe had gotten started on capitalism, but had not yet attained its breakthrough to industrial production and marketing. We know much more about European mercantilism than we do about that of the Middle East. This pioneering book helps fill the gap, and does so by focusing on a single individual merchant, operating under completely non-European paradigms of financing, transportation, societal norms, and creating wealth.
The book could in some ways be read as a novel, since it is about one person in a strange society, and in my view this simply shows what a good book it is. When you can even imagine a historical work as a story, then the author has done a good job. If you want a vision of what a non-European model of trade might be, this book will help you attain that.

Not entirely engaging, but informative

This book describes the life of a merchant (Abu Taqiyya) and some details about his family. You see how he traded, where he traveled, how he negotiated, etc. Also, you see how his family was affected by Abu's merchant lifestyle. It's informative cultural history. But, it's a little slow.
The details sometimes get a little too detailed. It's not a sweeping novel, by any means. This was written by a scholar, so expect to see more detail and analyzation than you would in say, a historical fiction novel.
The book does its job -- teaching you about merchant culture in 17th century middle east. It's just not a "fun" book compared to most.

Fabulous Insight to Transgender Life

I devoured this book over three days. I could not put it down as Bobbie Thompson has a great storytelling ability. Her journey from somewhat closed-minded woman in a small town to blossoming into being open and accepting to all walks of life was wonderful. I think each chapter was delivered perfectly in a way to help the reader understand each step of the way.

Well written with a great delivery, it helped me to understood why Bobbie felt the way she did at first and why she changed her point of view. This is a great read for anyone wanting to understand the life, culture and diverse world of transgender. I highly recommend this book if you are what you would consider a "normal person" struggling to understand others who are different. Not just transgender, but people with different thoughts, sexualities and ways of living. Likewise it's the perfect read for anyone who is transgender and wants to understand the learning process of those not born trans.

A perfect companion book to her spouse's. I would recommend having both on the coffee table at all times for anyone who stops by for a visit!

Funny, Enlighting, Provocative

Loved reading her story! Bobbie tells you from her perspective what it's like to find out that someone she knew most of her life, engaged in an intimate affair with for several years then eventually married was actually a woman! Her country charm and beliefs seriously put to the test when she see's a "man in a dress" for the first time, explained as only she can explain. Relationships put into question, love questioned, even life questioned. She explains how she came to understand it all, work through it all and accept it all. Anyone wanting to know what it's like as a spouse to come to terms with your spouse not being who you thought they were, or you just want some good information told in a funny, witty "southern charm" kinda way, then read this book! It's a great companion book to her spouses book, "Hung In The Middle", by Alana Nicole Sholar.

I loved this story!

I loved this story and felt like I really got to know Bobbie through reading it.

This is a fantastic memoir to introduce people to the experience of coming to terms with and supporting a transgender person. While it was a little hard to read the judgments and thoughts Bobbie had about Alana when she first realized Alana was presenting as female, it's absolutely integral to the story. It allows the reader to see Bobbie as a real person, with real, not-so-pretty thoughts, and identify with her. Bobbie then uses that rapport with the reader to show them a path to loving and supporting the transgender people in their life.

As transgender people become more visible, stories like Bobbie's will be invaluable to help eliminate fear of the unknown and help people come to terms with the fact that the world is different than they might have thought.

The book could have used a little more editing, but I give it 5 stars regardless because the message of the story is 5-star worthy.

She earned a Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an MBA at the Cass School of Business, City University, London. She has had expatriate assignments in Germany, the UK, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Korea. Her interests include the role of culture in international business and the pedagogy of international management. Her publications include The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Management. Vol. VI: International Management, 2nd ed., Oxford, UK: Blackwell Publishing (2005); and The Blackwell Handbook of Global Management, Oxford, UK: Blackwell Publishing (2004). Her teaching, research and presentations have received many awards, including The Roethlisberger Best Paper of the Year Award from the Journal of Management Education and the Alpha Phi Alpha Teacher of the Year Award. Her articles have been included in journals and collections focused on teaching in the area of international business. She is an avid master rower and enjoys running, reading, and gardening.

Professor of marketing and international business at the University of Texas, Pan American. He was educated at the University of North Carolina, American University, and Cornell and holds a PhD from Vanderbilt University. His research focuses on comparative consumer behavior, international marketing strategy, political risk, and the consumption of high-technology experiential products. He has authored or edited 14 books and monographs, over 110 published papers, and over 35 case studies; he serves on the editorial boards of several leading international academic journals; he served as the Saastamoinen Foundation Chair at the Helsinki School of Economics in Finland; he was the founding chair of the Strategic Alliances Committee of the Licensing Executives Society; he served as the chair of both the International Business and the Strategy and Policy divisions of the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada; and he is past chairperson of the Academy of Management’s International Management division. His research has appeared in the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of International Management, Columbia Journal of World Business, Management International Review, Journal of Management Studies, Human Resource Management Journal, Long Range Planning, Organisation Studies, and Journal of Applied Psychology, among others. He has received 11 “best paper” awards for his research, including the Decade Award for most influential article from the Journal of International Business Studies. His teaching performance has earned numerous awards in the United States, Canada, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Europe, including the University Distinguished Teacher Award. He was the first recipient of the International Educator Award from Cal Poly, and he endowed a scholarship for students to work and study internationally.

Consultant to multinational corporations, was a professor of marketing and international business for several years after leaving industry. He has a degree in mechanical engineering from Ohio State and a doctorate in business administration from the University of Florida. Ball has published articles in the Journal of International Business Studies and other publications. Before obtaining his doctorate, he spent 15 years in various marketing and production management positions in Mexico, South America, and Europe.

Great for school

Received this when I was in school. Amazon rent is probably the best place to get the books you need. Grant it they do not have all the books you will need but most of them they will. I was even able to find some that my instructors said that I may have an issue finding. Amazon rent saved me a ton of money and I recommend it for any and everyone in school. If you are going to be a little late on your return they can extend your rental for a low fee with out having to buy the book at full cost returning the books are easy as well. This in itself should inspire folks to get out there and get their degree.

One of my favorite textbooks

This is probably one of the best textbooks I have used. The book is well-written and easy to follow. There are a lot of current examples used to illustrate the points made. Each chapter ends with a short bio of a student or professional who works in an international position. The only negative is that all of the persons interviewed graduated from the same university. There are also a host of websites and resources listed at the end of each chapter. I rented this book and seriously considered purchasing it at the end of the semester. It's that good.

What are the authors implying to say - is not clear.
Not sure who said this book is practical. What where which chapter ? Do they know meaning of word practical .

The books has just theory - no real life applicable example. No direct answers - Just too much random information cramped.

Shane on the authors and publisher. In the name of knowledge and guidance- it just a show off or random pictures and ideas.

Surprisingly revealing of Luther Burbank's feelings for all creations in nature. His passion for all things that grow and complete the life/death cycle and his desire to help humans be the best they can be may have been misunderstood by some. He was not the product of academia. He was the passionate, genuine "amateur" meaning he could no more live without experimenting to improve everything that he attempted to grow any more than Thomas Jefferson could have lived without book. This brief work is for everyone's book-to-keep list.

I consider the book a perfect guide written by a professional for professionals. If you are looking for scientific completeness and complication, go somewhere else. If you are looking for a competent down-to-earth reference, this is your book. I wonder when the third edition of this valuable tool will be published.

excellent non-mathematical primer

I work in the securities industry, and this book accurately described the markets and products without the detailed mathematics. I would recommend this book as a first reading before the Hull and White book which is much more mathematical.
Too bad it's out of print. I'd like everyone in my group to have a copy.

I'm using this for my motor controls class. I was impressed with the information in this book, as well as how it's layout is. Also, if you have a QR reader, there are knowledge tests and other features which will pull up on your phone. They're located at the end of each chapter. Comes with a CD as well. For a used copy, I was surprised I got a CD which wasn't even touched (perforations on the plastic envelope are still untouched). Images, and text are clearly understandable for me (I'm a 6+YR Electronics/Electrical maintenance supervisor), and seem that it'd be great for a beginner. Chances are, if you're purchasing this book it's for a class, and I must say, It'd be worth buying it cheap and hanging onto it. A memory refresh is good once in a while.

Electrical Motor controls for Intergrated systems

Written in a format that can be understood and applied to field applications.
Breaks down the different areas and components in an organized manner.
Covers basic concepts, operations and schematics in straight forward, easy to understand terms.
Gives real life applications and explains how it applies and functions.
Good entry level as well as experienced field personnel.

I only wish that there were other technical books written as well as this.
Definitely a good investment and necessary reference addition to anyone's library that is working in the electrical field.
