The best, most comprehensive branding book I've seen in my decades long career

This book contains just about everything you'll need to know about branding. I've been in the communications business since the 1970s, having begun my career on New York's Madison Avenue at BBD&O, Young & Rubicam and J. Walter Thompson. I've also worked in marketing at Coca Cola, was a creative director at Time Warner, and worked as a communications consultant for more than a dozen Fortune 500 companies in America, and for the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Manila, Philippines and the United Nations in Bangkok, Thailand. In these jobs, I've handled advertising, corporate communications, marketing, focus groups, and every kind of creative material in print, motion and sound. I rarely read marketing books because I find they have little of anything to say that I do not already know. In 2010, I was asked to do a brand review proposal for ADB. I always handle this stuff simply from my own knowledge and experience. However, I found this book in the ADB library, was intrigued, and ordered a copy, which I read cover-to-cover. When I was finished I could only say that I wished I had read this book 20 years earlier because I would have been able to offer my clients so much more. Not only does this book cover all you need to know about branding, but it's also filled with scores of case histories, which were especially interesting to me because I had worked on some of these company accounts while working at New York City ad agencies or directly as an employee at or consultant to the company--Burger King, Coca-Cola, Proctor & Gamble, among them. These case histories, which spanned decades were spot on to what I experienced with these companies, and also allowed me to follow up on strategies that I was aware of in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s as they changed through the decades, and either succeeded or failed. Yes, this is a textbook. But I find textbooks the best way to learn because the good ones start with the basics and cover all sides of an argument, which is why I have a library of art, history, and science textbooks on my shelf. This is not an easy read and you will find yourself having to take notes and rereading certain sections over and over. But no matter how long you've been in the business, you will not find a more comprehensive branding book anywhere. Pay the extra dollar and buy this book. You will thank yourself for doing it.

This is a second copy for me...I love this book and treat it as my "brand strategy bible". It rings true with what I've experienced in 40+ years of building strong brands and offers both fresh new practical tools along with entirely new perspectives. This is best thinking that I've encountered.

A compact little number, awesome for quick artistic inspiration

The Little Book of Vintage Sci-Fi is a collection 1940's and 1950's comic book covers, panels and ads assembled mostly in random fashion (with an eye toward the more amusingly salacious illustrations and dialogue) and reproduced on a miniature scale, mere inches in both width and height. If you've set foot in a bookstore, like, ever, you'll have surely spotted teensy-tiny books just like these, generally in the vicinity of the cash registers, as they are to bookstores what candy and gum are to grocery stores: cheaply-priced trifles designed to be purchased on impulse. And they're designed to fit perfectly in a typical shirt pocket.

Little if any of the material within these editions is presented in anything approaching its entirety or even in continuity (though some panels certainly are), nor is scholarly appreciation really the point beyond Tim Pilcher's brief introductions and backgrounders. The books in this series -- comprised of tiny tomes encompassing lurid, often hyperbolic material likewise culled from Horror, Sci-Fi, Combat, Romance and other comics of the golden age (much of it produced under the legendary aegis of EC Comics -- are best savored as entry-level novelty items, which is obviously the spirit in which they were produced. If you want to read complete stories, or learn the full-bodied history of this glorious period in American publishing, there are bountiful histories, biographies, trade paperback reprints, and coffee-table books that will introduce you to the form from almost every conceivable angle. These little amusements, on the other hand, are simply samplers of the era and its comic art, an era all too short-lived as the holier-than-thou Catholic Legion of Decency (sheeyeah, right!), the Comics Code Authority and their vile ilk largely succeeded in their mission to whitewash the fun out of America from the mid-1930's to the mid-1960's. Whenever someone who lived through this period laments how much "simpler" and "better" and more moral times were "back then" compared to today, you can rest assured they're remembering the rose-colored, corn-fed Andy Hardy version of America these organizations tried so desperately to make real in the face of all evidence of natural human behaviour to the contrary, and not the reality itself. Comic books like those feted in this collection were the sacrificial lambs on the altar of conservative delusion.

If you're an artist of designer of any kind (as I am), or in any way a fan of this pulpy greatness already in possession of the types of standard-size books mentioned above (as I am), then a set of these miniature quickies may still prove useful when you're looking for a quick shot of inspiration without fear of unintentionally devoting several hours to re-reading these lurid stories all over again simply because you cracked the cover of some hefty volume on your shelf and couldn't put it down.

A somewhat interesting little book on old science fiction images and a few stories.

I have been a long time fan of science fiction books, comics, toys and movies. This little book (Only 41/2 inches by 31/2 inches) has a collection of old time science fiction comic covers, stories and old toy advertisements that were popular back in the 1950s. This volume is organized into six areas. It includes the introduction, an explanation of falling frogs science fiction story, out of the unknown No. 1 creature from the crater story, Facts about that great heavenly body, The sun, Our atomic future and It's patented.

One of the things I found interesting in this little book were some of the advertisements. As a young boy I remember sending for some of these things. They include the following: Jet: Rocket Space Ship, Major Mar's Rocket Ring, The Buck Rogers Sonic Ray and The Cosmic Smoke Gun. It is too bad I did not keep those crazy things I sent for when I was a young boy. They are probably worth a fortune today.

In conclusion, if you are into old time science fiction material you may want to check this small volume out.

Truth or Dare...

In this last installment of the Strong Karma series, Karma and Mark truly have come Full Circle in their relationship. As in any relationship full disclosure is a must and that only comes about when all the walls come down and you put all your trust in that one person you can't live without. In Full Circle both Karma and Mark struggle to put the past to rest so that they can move forward and begin to build their life together. This proves to be more difficult for Mark than he originally thought and though he is totally devoted to Karma his past rears it's ugly head over and over. Karma and Mark's journey began as a temporary summer fling and became so much more, something all consuming ,but can Mark overcome his past and in doing so put Karma first in his life?

I have been totally hooked from the very beginning of this series and Full Circle was everything I could have hoped for, Karma and Mark's journey has not been exactly an easy one but the good things in life never are. To say that their story was a bit of a rollercoaster ride would be putting it lightly, I laughed and I cried and totally fell in love with their story. In the end it all came down to Truth or Dare and as everyone knows that can be a difficult game to play especially as it relates to life. I certainly would like to see more of Karma and Mark as I fell in love with them and their friends and families. hope you choose to read this series and enjoy it as much as I have.

Final installment...and I want more please!

The final book in the strong karma trilogy is here and my goodness was it worth the wait!

As always Donya Lynne has created a group of wonderful characters that are not only completely fleshed out but...they aren't perfect. They have issues and struggles. I know some people dislike trilogy's as they want a happy ending within the book they are reading however this story would have not been as amazing as it was had the writer tried to condense it. She never left the reader hanging with a cliff hanger and the entire story was very nicely tied up by the end. It wasn't drawn out unnecessarily and it wasn't all fixed in a quick way either.

Grammar and spelling...I didn't see any glaring errors ( the author seems to be very meticulous in her proof reading and editing process)

And while I got my HEA at the end...it still left me wanting more. Not because I was left with unanswered questions or felt unfulfilled but because I just want to read more about all of these people :)

What an amazing book!

What an amazing book!

Im not a believer of diets or drastic changes in you eating habits. That only means temporary change=body harm.

Im a 31 y/o. No kids. Married. With a 7:30-5:00 job. A 40 min commute. And a fitbit watch to try to achieve at least 8,000 steps a day. In other words, Im kinda normal.

I always was underweight. My ideal weight used to be 106-110. Im only 5ft. When I turned 26 my weight started to change due to bad eating habits. I went to 125, then 135 and finally 145. I started watching what I was eating about two years ago, but loosing that extra weight hasn't been easy.

As per my primary doc, my ideal weight for my height and age should be 115-125. I dont know how to achieve that!

I do not consume sugars/sweets because I simply dont like them. My weakness is beer and buffalo wings. I dont eat salty either, it became a habit after my dad got a heart surgery about ten years ago.

My breakfast is usually tea with crackers, for lunch I like soup, and dinner varies. But I think dinner is what kills me. For the most part I cook a typical Hispanic meal: rice, beans, and some sort of meat. But when I don't cook, hubby and I just order food (pizza or Chinese).

For about two years now, my weight hit the 130-135 mark. I have not been able to weight less than that.

I decided to give this book a try not to achieve my ideal weight, I gave up on that a while ago. But to cleanse my system which I think is something I truly need.

In just four days I already feel the difference: Im sleeping so much better. I have so much energy and somehow, Im always happy (Im like that famous grumpy cat, so a happy face is abnormal in my case haha).

Giving up meats is not a challenge (I was vegetarian for about three years, until I developed rashes and a weak inmune system). Im not that much into dairy. Fruits are the love of my life. I love bread, but I can survive without it; same with pasta. But the beer??? Oh my! I love my beer at night. Yet, I have not missed it. Im fine without it ;)

Weird craving Ive been having is salt. However, I love pickled veggies, so I guess thats where the craving comes from.

What makes this program easy is that you are not deprived from eating at all. If you feel hungry you get to eat any veggies or fruits of your choice. You also get to eat hard boiled eggs, which I never ate those many before in my life hahaha. They are filling and very nutricious. The book does not mention a limit on eggs. I did some research and an average of 4-6 a day is completely healthy. I'm having three a day. I also snack on fruits and veggies that are not part of the smoothy of the day, that way I do not loose motivation.

I am not doing the salt-water flush. Not my thing.! I will let my body do everything on its own. Im not adding sweetners either, but thats just because as I said before, I dont like sweets. Im drinking plenty of water which I always have, and a bought a variety of detox teas to switch flavors.

Lastly, pretty much all my ingredients are organic. Ive been buying organic for years now. And I am not adding any protein to my smoothies. I rather to get that protein from organic eggs.

I will update this post with more results. My experience is a good one. I completely suggest you try this program. The only side effect I experienced was a little rash by my lip. It went away in half hour and it happened on my first day. Another thing Im experiencing is something like hot-flashes hahaha... I just wake up sweating and with my body tempeture up. But I dont feel like is something bad. Maybe the sweat is the way my system is cleansing.

By the way, I decided to take pics everyday. I want to see the difference my self. No filters used, filters dont cheat others but yourself! And, I decided to use the same outfit when taking the pictures so that the results are hopefully, more visible.

Update

Hello everyone!

I am sorry for not updating this post earlier. Believe it or not, I couldnt figure out how to do it + Im a busy girl.

So, I uploaded all other pics.

Since a succesful end to my cleanse, I have continued with the modified version (2 smoothies and a HEALTHY meal).
My total loss was 10 pounds and I continue to be at 125. 125 is perfect in my case given my height and age. However, I am thinking about doing the cleanse again soon; not to lose weight, but to get rid of xmas/new yrs/vacation toxins :)

I have to admit that my eating habits completely changed. I continue to crave fruits and veggies on a daily basis. To me that is the most interesting part of all. I continue to indulge on buffalo wings and beer over the weekends and my results continue to be the same. By The way, on the weekends I rarely drink smoothies; I eat 2-3 meals and feel just fine. However, and once again, my meals are healthy. I kinda became a pesquetarian, all I eat is fish and lots of veggies.

On another note, I gave a try to three different things mentioned in the book: sea-salt water flush (I add a lime to it to make it easier to drink) and oh my if I recommend it, it makes me feel digestively clean :). I also bought Mag07 and wow! JJ Smith is right about those pills, is a great way to stay regular and help your digestive system stay healthy. Finally, I did the liver cleanse (8oz water and 2tbs apple cider vinegar) and my waist has gotten thinner.

I continue to go to the book all the time. I get recipes from there, and I just go back to her various tips.

Since, I bought another book with hundreds of green smoothie recipes. I like JJ Smith's recipes better because are less sweeter, but nonetheless, the other book helps me keep up with my routine too.

I developed a method: Once a month I get a shopping list ready. I separate all recipes on ziploc bags and freeze them. The night before I take them out and done! I waste no time making my daily dose of health.

I also bought a Ninja blender. Mine was a small one and I had to make a smoothie at a time (no time for that in the am). Im totally in love with my new blender because I make 2-3 cups of the same smoothie at once.

I continue to recommend the book. Im also very active in JJ Smith's twitter account because the program worked like a charm in my case. I love my new eating habits and how I feel in general, and thats all thanks to JJ Smith.

Last note: people constantly compliment me on my skin and hair, people do notice my weight loss, and people continue to talk about how cheerful I am most of the time which I find hillarious given how grumpy I am ha!

This book is amazing!! After 10 days I lost 12lbs. My hair and skin looked better. I was waking up earlier and with more energy throughout the day. I has lost all cravings for junk food. And I am an (or should say was) a junk food junkie. This book is a must have for anyone looking to jump start a healthier lifestyle. I am still doing the smoothies and I am still losing. Best $10 I have ever spent!!! And if you think I am a fake person I am the top pics on the before and after page!

The 1990s have witnessed a sort of renaissance in cave art, thanks to new discoveries from the south of France. Previously, the oldest examples of human art were thought to have been painted 15,000 years ago. When these three spelunkers-turned-authors happened upon the Chauvet cave (named after one of them), however, they visited an underground art gallery that had been closed for 30,000 years. It's still inaccessible today, except to specialists. But this wonderful book of pictures and text allows virtual tourists to appreciate the creations of our remotest ancestors. This may be primitive art in the literal sense of the term, but it's remarkably sophisticated.

The prehistoric paintings recently discovered in Chauvet Cave are twice as old as the paintings of Lascaux, and show both considerable strength and beauty. The discoverers of Chauvet Cave are well known and respected speleologists who maintained impeccable records while exploring their find. It is they who tell the story of their explorations. In many ways this book is reminiscent of Carter's writings about Tutankhamen's tomb with a similar sense of awe at the millennia that had passed between the fabrication of the work and the modern discovery. The text is good, with a clean, easy-to-read translation by prehistorian Paul G. Bahn, who also provides the foreword. Before there were artists at the famous caves of Lascaux, there were artists at Chauvet and Cosquer--two caves whose paleolithic drawings remained undiscovered until the 1990s. Chauvet, in southeast France, is the most ancient; some of its vivid panels of horses, lions, and rhinoceri (beautifully reproduced here) are as much as 31,000 years old. Cosquer, buried for 20 centuries beneath the Mediterranean, was serendipitously discovered by a diver for whom the cave is named. Some of the Cosquer drawings date back 27,000 years. First Book Published in English an the Cave Discoverer is the Author

This book was the first in English to come out on this amazing cave. The author is the discoverer of the cave: Jean-Marie Chauvet. Because of that, the cave was named for him. He also was in charge of the team responsible for the analysis of the find. Since the book was published in the early days of analyzing the cave, the text on the contents of the cave is not as detailed (or complete) as it might be for a similar book published at a later date. Still, it is one of the best books available on this cave in English. Highly recommended!

The entrance to the Chauvet cave was sealed off in a landslide 23,000 years ago, creating a time capsule from the Upper Paleolithic period (the Ice Age). A time when Europe was covered with huge glaciers, the sea level was hundreds of feet lower than what it is today, the population was only a few thousand people (including Neanderthals), and long extinct animal (like wooly mammoths, cave bears, cave lions, etc.) roamed Europe. The cave is so well preserved that the hundreds of drawings and paintings (made during several periods thousands of years apart) appear as fresh as if they were made only recently.

worth getting

This book is filled with beautiful photographs of the oldest known cave art in the world. Simply flipping through and examining these paintings is an amazing experience. However, the text is a little less than breathtaking, providing little information for even those of us who know very little about cave art. It is little more than a description of how the discoverers felt upon finding this cave. Nonetheless, this book is worth purchasing, if only for the spectacular photos.

Beautiful Photographs of the oldest cave art known.

The Chauvet Cave in Southern France has caused art history to have to be re-written. This brilliantly painted cave- far older than Lascaux and others in the region is exhibited beautifully here in a lush "Coffee Table" book form. These are well reproduced photographs of superb art work. Some of the animals drawn by the ancient artists have multiple legs- suggesting motion. Also surprising is the attempt at a realistic perspective in some of the works. As excellent as the book is in its photographs it is short on explaining the many questions this art brings to mind such as - "What function did this art serve." Perhaps this is for the best since the answers may always remain in the realm of speculation. This book is the only way to see this great art- as the cave will probably never be opened to general public visitation.
