Outstanding!

Kinross has written an outstanding survey of the Ottoman Empire. He traces the history of the Empire starting with its great founder Osman, through its' highest glory at the time of its two greatest sons Mehmed The Conqueror and Suleiman The Magnificant and finally to its fall in the early 20th century. The book evolves around the sultans and thus the story is told mostly as the story of the Empire's rulers and their policies or lack thereof. However, by chosing this approach Kinross has managed to accomplish the monumental task of covering 600 years of history in one extremely interesting volume. It is therefore an excellent introduction to the subject and a good starting point for those interested in the Turkish empire. In many ways this book is similar to Norwich's excellent Byzantine Trilogy and fans of Norwich will also like this book.

Well-written, terribly researched.

This was the first book about Ottoman History I ever read. Having now read litterally hundreds of books about the subject, I re-read Kinross and have some comments:

- Kinross has an engaging style, and this book may ignite an interest in Ottoman history in readers, but only for the EARLY history of the empire, which is clearly where Kinross' interests lie. Even then he doesn't seem to be able to distinguish between history and legend, and a rich and dynamic history is reduced to an Oriental soap opera. His account of the decline is depressing, reflective of Victorian bigotry and bias, and innaccurate and condescending to the point of being mildly insulting.

- Kinross uses NO Ottoman or Turkish sources whatsoever, but then he doesn't really use anything written later than the 19th c.

- He brushes over the 19th c, and subscribes to the 19th c British static view of imperial decay - the Ottomans just sat around declining and having things done to it. In reality, the 19th c is one of the most interesting periods of Ottoman history, wherin the empire was forced to respond to th impact of European capitalism and imperialism. Really dynamic and creative reform programs were instituted with the result that the Ottomans at the turn of the 20th c were incalculably stronger than they were at the turn of the 18th. The Tanzimat is given short shrift as an insincere effort to please the powers and is portrayed as the idea of the British Ambassador (!) and the Hamidiyan era is portrayed as a period of retrenchment, fanaticism, and decadence, when in reality Abdul Hamid, albeit with oppressively autocratic means, enormously modernized the empire and created the school system that educated later reformers including Ataturk. Kinross is totally ignorant of intellectual trends in the Ottoman Empire and their interplay with other Muslim lands and the West.

If this is your first Ottoman history book, I would read it up until the death of Suleyman and then drop it. I am not aware of a more modern and accurate general survey of the same type that is not too dry and academic for the casual reader, but I would highly recommend Selim Deringil's "The Well-Protected Domains" to get a feel of the self-perception of the Ottomans in the late 19th c.

Poignant look at the economics of poverty

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I felt the authors bring up salient issues about the world's economic realities and offers some concrete suggestions on beginning to tackle issues of extreme poverty. I did not necessarily agree with each and every method proposed, however the book was well written and thought provoking and inspired a spirited discussion amongst peers!

Book is great; bookbinding subpar?

Schiller is definitely a careful and thorough writer, which makes this a very comprehensive overview of poverty in the U.S. I definitely suggest it to anyone to learn more about the causes and effects of poverty and I especially suggest this for anyone going into social work, public health, education, or another social service profession. However, this book fell apart (I mean the pages literally just came apart from one another) within days of receiving it. It was a brand-new book when it arrived. Did this happen to anyone else?

Delicious recipes for busy families

Sometimes my husband and I talk about the fancy meals I made before we had kids - and then we LAUGH and LAUGH at the idea of me trying to pull one of those meals off with our three littles ones running around the house. Fortunately, delicious doesn't have to be complicated, and this cookbook proves it.

I've tried the Roasted Garlic Cabbage (A personal favorite), Mississippi Pot Roast (Oh. My. Goodness.), Chicken Piccata (My kids favorite), Sriracha Shrimp Lettuce Wraps (Served these on game day and my husband raved about them - also super quick and easy), and Chipotle Chicken Fingers With Honey Mustard (Now in permanent rotation). Everything was easy to make and got a thumbs up from my kids.

Now, this next part should probably come with a "results may vary" disclaimer, but let me tell you what happened on the day I made the sriracha shrimp and my husband was watching his favorite football team play.

Me: When the game is on commercial I have a big ask.
Husband (hits mute): What's the ask?
Me: Will you build me a platform bed like in this photo?

I am an avid reader of her blog and I pre ordered this book! The recipes are GREAT! I especially love the ones to make your own condiments! Yay for homemade ketchup without all the processed junk!!

I love this book already!

This book is great! I can already tell it will have a permanent spot in my kitchen. I love how only nourishing ingredients are used. The recipes are simple and so far delicious. It's like several books compact into one. I wish this book would've been around 8 years ago when I found Nourishing Traditions and started my real food journey.
My one critique is though you are given a 2 week meal plan, when you turn to the recipe, some recipes only serve 2 people. With my family being a family of 7 this makes it so you may think you have purchased everything according to the shopping list then go to make the recipe only to be frustrated that you need more food than expected.
It's still helpful and just means I will need to go through each recipe and adapt the shopping list. It's still a good start just not as helpful as I was thinking it would be.

WOW! This book is amazing! I have been reading about the quantum for quite a while, and have seen "What the Bleep" and read "The Secret". As interesting as they were, I gleaned no tools from them with which I could actually affect change in my life. Dr. Reid's "5 Steps to a Quantum Life" not only clearly explains how the quantum works, it contains simple, user-friendly tools in the form of meditations and exercises which instruct the reader vividly on how to USE the knowledge. This is the book I have been waiting for! For the holidays, I am giving a copy to everyone I love; it's that good!

Excellent: Even Better than The Secret

I absolutely loved this book. I liked The Secret, but it left me with more questions than answers. Ms. Reid's book provides the missing pieces to the puzzle of creating the life I want. 5 Steps to a Quantum Life provides insight, helpful information and a whole host of useful exercises, meditations and practices to create the things I want in my life. After a couple weeks, I can already see tangible ways that these practices are working for me in my life. I've recommended this book to all my frieds and they are loving it as well. A must read!

Great reference on warehouse management

I recommend this book primarily for the extensive content. At over 900 pages, this book is enormous. Though you may want more detailed information on certain topics, you will at least find some useful information on virtually every topic related to managing a warehouse. The book is actually a collection of chapters written by different authors. Each chapter can be read independently of the others, which makes this a very good reference book.
Because of the multiple authors, there is some redundancy between chapters and inconsistency in the quality of the content.
If you're responsible for managing a warehouse, you should have this book on your bookshelf.

Great resource

This atlas is a great resource and supplement to other 'atlases' of rocks and minerals in thin section. The micrographs are excellent quality and the descriptions are excellent. No such book can be comprehensive but this atlas covers a broad variety of igneous rocks and includes some unusual rocks that most geologists will never encounter. There is an added bonus: the appendix contains step-by-step instructions for preparing thin sections without expensive equipment.
